September 2026: World War III Escalation Watch

Are We Watching the World Move Toward the Sixth Trumpet War?

World War III Escalation Watch: Revelation 9, Matthew 24, and the growing risk of global war.

As I write this on September 13, 2026, I believe Christians need to pay very close attention to what is happening around the world.

I am not setting a date for Bible prophecy. I am not claiming that every war, earthquake, missile launch, or political crisis represents the fulfillment of a particular verse.

But neither should Christians ignore what Jesus specifically told us to watch for.

Matthew 24:6–8, KJV

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

Jesus did not tell His followers to panic. In fact, He specifically said, “see that ye be not troubled.” But He certainly told us to pay attention. And right now there is a great deal to pay attention to.

The Sixth Trumpet War

One of the most frightening prophecies in the Bible appears in Revelation 9.

Revelation 9:13–21, KJV

“And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.
And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.
And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”

I have long believed that this event—what I call the Sixth Trumpet War—could correspond to what the modern world would recognize as World War III.

Notice several things. The prophecy specifically mentions the Euphrates region. It describes an army numbering two hundred million. It describes destruction involving fire, smoke and brimstone. And, most frighteningly, it says that one-third of mankind is killed.

The Bible does not use the words “nuclear weapons.” We should never pretend that it does. But in my opinion, the extraordinary scale and nature of the destruction John describes are certainly compatible with what a modern nuclear war could produce. And today mankind possesses the weapons to make destruction on that scale physically possible.

Middle East — RED: High and Escalating

The war in the Middle East is no longer easily contained within one country or one confrontation.

American and Iranian forces have directly exchanged attacks. Reuters reported on September 5 that U.S. forces struck Iranian oil tankers after Iranian missile attacks on U.S. Navy ships. Fighting around the Strait of Hormuz has also intensified, while attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and Houthi operations around Yemen and the Red Sea have widened the strategic geography of the conflict.

This matters enormously. The Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb are two of the most strategically important shipping passages on earth. Trouble affecting both simultaneously brings energy supplies, international commerce, the United States, Gulf Arab governments, Iran and Iranian-backed forces into an increasingly interconnected conflict.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing, but the conflict has already disrupted energy markets and shipping. Iran has clearly demonstrated that it still possesses the ability and willingness to employ missiles. The notion that Iran has simply been disarmed or rendered incapable of continuing the fight is increasingly difficult to maintain.

Iran, Twelver Shiism and the Twelfth Imam

There is also a religious dimension here that Western observers should not simply dismiss.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is constitutionally founded upon Twelver Ja’fari Shiite Islam. Twelver Shiism teaches that the Twelfth Imam disappeared centuries ago and will someday return as the Mahdi, a divinely guided ruler associated with the ultimate triumph of justice. Iran’s political system itself was constructed around the question of religious authority during the Twelfth Imam’s absence.

That matters.

It does not establish that Iran has an official policy of deliberately starting World War III in order to cause the Mahdi to return. We should not state speculation as fact. Iranian leaders have repeatedly demonstrated concern for regime survival, strategic advantage, deterrence and regional influence as well.

But neither should we make the opposite mistake and assume theology has nothing whatsoever to do with the behavior of a government explicitly founded upon theology. Among highly ideological elements of the Iranian system, beliefs concerning martyrdom, divine destiny, sacrifice and the ultimate triumph of their religious order could influence perceptions of risk, endurance and compromise.

That raises a legitimate question: Could Iran’s religious ideology be one factor helping explain its willingness to continue resisting enormous military and economic pressure rather than accepting terms its enemies believe should compel surrender?

We cannot prove that from outside the Iranian leadership. But it is a possibility worth considering. For Christians studying Revelation, the fact that this confrontation is intensifying in the broader Middle Eastern region associated with the Euphrates makes it especially worthy of attention. Again, that does not prove that the Sixth Trumpet has begun. It means we should be watching.

Russia, Ukraine and NATO — RED-ORANGE: Very High

The Russia–Ukraine conflict is also moving increasingly close to direct confrontation with NATO.

On September 13, a Russian drone struck a train near the Polish-Ukrainian border shortly after a diplomatic delegation carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt had passed through the area. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was nearby aboard another train. Ukraine’s railway operator suggested the diplomatic train may possibly have been targeted, although that has not been proven.

That same day Russia struck a truck near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing at the Polish border. Russia said it was targeting infrastructure associated with European military cargo.

Think about how little margin for error remains. Poland is NATO. If Russian weapons cause substantial casualties on NATO soil, the political pressure for a NATO response could become enormous.

European governments are clearly preparing for contingencies they once considered far less likely. Britain’s Ministry of Defence is preparing exercises to test mobilization of its Strategic Reserve of former service personnel. Government documents also describe broader recall authorities for “War Preparations” and raising the recall age for non-officers from 55 to 65.

Whenever nuclear-armed Russia and nuclear-armed NATO are operating this close to one another, the greatest danger may not be a deliberate decision to start World War III. It may be miscalculation.

North Korea — ORANGE

The nuclear situation in North Korea is also deteriorating. On September 9, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that North Korea had constructed another uranium enrichment facility at Yongbyon capable of housing as many as 28 centrifuge cascades. Additional enrichment activity has also been observed elsewhere.

In other words, while the world focuses on Russia and the Middle East, another nuclear-armed nation continues expanding the infrastructure that can produce nuclear-weapons material.

China and Taiwan — YELLOW-ORANGE

China has not invaded Taiwan. That distinction matters. But military pressure across the Western Pacific remains a major strategic concern, and the danger becomes greater if the United States is simultaneously stretched across Europe and the Middle East.

Wars frequently spread not because every participant planned a global war from the beginning, but because one crisis creates an opportunity—or perceived necessity—for another nation to act. That is how separate wars can eventually become one larger war.

Global Nuclear Danger — RED

Here is a statistic that should sober everyone.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimated that, as of January 2026, the world’s nine nuclear-armed states possessed approximately 12,187 nuclear warheads. Approximately 4,012 were deployed, while roughly 2,100 to 2,200 deployed warheads were maintained at high operational alert, overwhelmingly belonging to Russia or the United States.

Meanwhile, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved its symbolic Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds before midnight in January 2026—the closest it has ever been. The Clock is not Bible prophecy, and it is not a prediction that nuclear war will occur. But it reflects an independent judgment by scientists and security specialists that the international system is becoming increasingly dangerous.

There is another statistic worth remembering. The Peace Research Institute Oslo reported 65 active state-based conflicts across 35 countries in 2025—the highest number recorded since 1946—and eight interstate conflicts, double the number in 2024.

Do These Events Prove the Sixth Trumpet Is About to Sound?

No.

Christians should resist the temptation to manipulate facts in order to make prophecy fit today’s newspaper. For example, although earthquakes and volcanic activity have recently attracted enormous attention, the evidence so far does not establish an extraordinary worldwide increase beyond normal geological variability.

If the evidence does not support a claim, we should say so. Bible prophecy does not need exaggeration.

But neither should we ignore the things that are measurable: multiple nuclear powers are engaged in serious confrontations; nuclear arsenals are being modernized; Iran remains militarily capable and ideologically committed to resisting its enemies; Russian military operations are occurring increasingly close to NATO territory; North Korea is expanding uranium enrichment; China continues military pressure around Taiwan; and the Middle East itself—the geographical region surrounding the Euphrates—is becoming increasingly unstable.

Those are facts worthy of serious attention.

The Beginning of Sorrows

Matthew 24:6–8, KJV

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

Some translations use the imagery of birth pains. Birth pains generally begin farther apart and then become more frequent and intense as delivery approaches. That does not give us permission to place a date on Christ’s return. It gives us reason to watch the direction of events.

Should Christians Prepare Physically?

Absolutely. Faith in God and practical preparation are not contradictions.

Proverbs 22:3, KJV

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.”

Joseph stored food before famine. Noah built the ark before the rain began. Preparation is not panic.

For families who are able, I believe it is reasonable to maintain emergency supplies including water, shelf-stable food, essential medications, hygiene supplies, flashlights, batteries, radios, first-aid materials, pet supplies and other necessities. A month’s supply is a reasonable preparedness goal for those who can maintain it.

Have a go bag ready. Keep identification, medications, copies of critical documents, basic clothing, food, water, first-aid supplies, chargers, flashlights and some cash together where you can reach them quickly.

Have a family communications plan. Know where your children and relatives will meet if normal communications fail. Know your neighbors. Find out who has medical knowledge, generators, tools, transportation or mobility limitations. A neighborhood where people know and help one another is far stronger than a collection of isolated households.

If There Were a Nuclear Attack

One thing needs to be understood very clearly. If a nuclear explosion occurs and radioactive fallout is possible, do not automatically jump into your automobile and attempt to flee. You could drive directly into the fallout plume.

The CDC’s fundamental instruction for a radiation emergency is: Get inside. Stay inside. Stay tuned.

A basement or the central portion of a substantial building generally provides far better protection than being outdoors. Put as much mass—concrete, brick, soil and walls—as possible between yourself and the fallout. Remain away from windows, exterior walls and the roof.

If radioactive fallout has contaminated you outside, removing your outer layer of clothing can remove a very large portion of that contamination, after which exposed skin and hair should be washed appropriately.

You should also understand something about potassium iodide, or KI. KI is not an antidote for radiation sickness. It protects the thyroid against radioactive iodine under specific circumstances. It does not protect your entire body from radiation. It should be taken when public-health authorities recommend it for the particular emergency involved.

Preparedness should be based upon knowledge—not internet mythology.

What Matters Most

We can store water. We can store food. We can prepare our homes. We can make evacuation plans. We can keep emergency radios and go bags. But none of those things answers the most important question.

Do you know Jesus Christ?

Revelation 9 tells us something heartbreaking. After all of the destruction described during the Sixth Trumpet, mankind still refuses to repent.

Revelation 9:20–21, KJV

“And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”

That may be one of the saddest passages in the entire Bible. Humanity experiences unimaginable judgment—and still refuses to repent. So the first preparation should not be your pantry. It should be your relationship with Jesus Christ.

Watch, Pray and Be Ready

I believe World War III is becoming increasingly possible. I believe a future war described in Revelation 9—the Sixth Trumpet War—will eventually produce destruction unlike anything mankind has previously experienced.

Are the events of September 2026 the opening phase of that war? I do not know. Neither does anyone else.

But I believe reasonable people can look at the trajectory of the Middle East, Russia and NATO, nuclear weapons, North Korea, China and Taiwan and conclude that the risk of a catastrophic great-power war is increasing.

Being watchful is not fear. Being prepared is not panic. And studying prophecy does not require us to exaggerate today’s headlines. It requires us to watch faithfully, speak truthfully and understand the times.

Matthew 24:42, KJV

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

So watch. Pray. Prepare your family. Know your neighbors. Keep your Bible open. And above everything else, know Jesus Christ.

Because whatever happens next in this increasingly dangerous world, He is still Lord.
