A 2,500-Year-Old Bad Idea: The Athens Marathon

The airport. We are about to board a plane for Greece, where I will be running in the world’s oldest marathon. In fact, that’s the very town the race starts in: Marathon, Greece.

The first marathon, of course, occurred in 490 BC when Pheidipedes ran from the battlefield of Marathon to the city of Athens whereupon he died of exhaustion. Which is why, in homage of this cherished history, all marathoners completing the Athens marathon are required, upon crossing the finish line, to drop dead.

I’ll be writing updates along the way.
