The White House lights are on, but the primary occupant is elsewhere.
Where, exactly, is not clear.
What is clear is that the emperor grows more naked by the week.
Hans Christian Andersen understood what that meant in 1837. He told this story:
Two swindlers convinced the emperor and his aides that they were extraordinary weavers, able to spin a narrative that would convince the people of the emperor’s brilliance. The emperor thought:
“These must, indeed, be wise journalists. Had I their support, I might convince the people of the realm of my fitness for office, and I would be able to distinguish the wise aides from the foolish! This narrative must be woven for me immediately.”
And so, the narrative took shape among many of the weavers in their guild who sat daily at their word-salad looms spinning the image of an experienced and competent emperor.
But eventually, others in the realm began to realize that, while the emperor, who was never a Mensa, lived in a big white house with lights bright, he was himself becoming less-and-less bright by the week.
Meanwhile, as many of those who once welcomed the emperor to the well-lit house continued to praise him, others had mounting doubts.
Soon, an old and trusted aide was sent to assess the narrative being spun by the word-salad weavers. As Hans Christian Andersen once wrote:
“So, the faithful old minister went into the hall, where the knaves were working with all their might, at their empty looms. ‘What can be the meaning of this?’ thought the old man, opening his eyes very wide. ‘I cannot discover the least bit of thread on the looms.’ However, he did not express his thoughts aloud.” Source
The old minister was not keen to jeopardize his access to the emperor, and more importantly, to those within the emperor’s circle.
About that time, a voice said events surrounding the emperor were getting too ridiculous to continue.
“What you don’t see, because we are in the middle of it, is that this equity revolution is already over. This is not an ascendant movement. This is the final self-parodic stage of American neo-liberalism. It helps nobody. It’s ridiculous. It is poisonous. It’s too disconnected from reality to continue. Close the schools, castrate your children, embrace nonviolent liberation? These aren’t policies that help a single person. They are not designed to do. They have another goal. This is a religious movement. What you are watching is a cult in decline. This is Jonestown. The only question is how many deluded suburban moms ride it out to the purple punch finale. But either way it is ending. Joe Biden is the last neo-liberal president in history, nobody wants this stuff anymore, it’s done.”
Perhaps Tucker Carlson is correct.
Perhaps, it’s only just begun.
