Barr has written an interesting memoir of his time as Attorney General. While he supported most of Trump’s policies and agenda, he attacks Trump as unfit to run in 2024. There is no reason for such attacks except for Barr to remain in the good graces of the Bush Republicans.
William P. Barr, Attorney General for President Trump and for President George H.W. Bush, has written an interesting memoir of his experience as Attorney General with the emphasis on his service during the Trump administration. See, “One Damn Thing After Another,” William P. Barr, Harper Collins, 2022.
Barr agrees with and supports the substance of most of President Trump’s policies and agenda and tried to help Trump. But it appears that Barr does not like Trump because of his “obnoxious” behavior, such as some tweets, and specifically Trump’s criticism of John McCain and Colin Powell after their death. Barr ends the book by saying Trump should not run in 2024 because he is not fit as a leader, despite the many accomplishments of Trump’s term, such as according to Barr, saving our country from Hillary Clinton.
Why did Barr write his memoir? It is unusual for an Attorney General to write about his service to the President. While not a true personal attorney-client relationship, the Attorney General is usually a strong loyal supporter of the president, such as Robert Kennedy for John F Kennedy, and Eric Holder for Obama, who does not write books attacking the president as unfit and revealing conversations with the president.
Barr speaks highly of President George H.W. Bush, and states he was a supporter of Jeb Bush in the 2016 primaries.
Barr opines that Trump lost the 2020 election because his personality turned off suburban independents and some Republicans, even though they liked his policies and the results of his policies. Barr states that his wife was turned off by Trump’s behavior. I suspect that Barr and his wife did not vote for Trump in 2020.
Barr does not believe there was substantial fraud in the 2020 election, but there was evidence of the potential for fraud. But he notes that the shortfall occurred in the six swing states. Just a coincidence.
He does state that the Attorney General and the federal U.S. Attorneys for each district are not equipped to investigate election fraud, and that it is the responsibility of each state to investigate election fraud. He criticizes Trump’s election attorneys but does not explain what they should have done, or what he would have done in their place.
Barr takes cheap shots at Rudy Giuliani. For example, at an event he did not want to shake hands with Rudy but did and says that Rudy’s mascara was dripping from his sideburns.
Maybe Barr should learn about Rudy’s tenure as U.S Attorney for the Southern District of New York where he prosecuted the Mafia, and his tenure as mayor of New York City where he reduced the crime rate, and specifically the murder rate. Barr has done nothing to compare with Rudy’s record, nor did any of the whiny Bush Republicans do anything to match Rudy’s accomplishments. Maybe they got paper cuts from writing memos.
Barr has no empathy for President Trump. Barr agrees that there was no lawful basis for the Russia investigation by Mueller, and that it was obvious in January 2017 that there was no evidence of collusion by Trump with Russia.
Barr also acknowledges that Trump was upset that Durham was taking much time without any tangible results before the 2020 election when it was clear the collusion charge was a hoax, and the Mueller investigation not warranted nor based on real evidence. Durham was appointed to investigate the source of the Russia Hoax.
Barr further agrees that there was no basis to prosecute General Flynn. Barr states that Comey sent two agents to interview Flynn, without notifying the White House and without approval from Assistant Attorney General Yates. The worst part, according to Barr, is that the agents had a verbatim copy of Flynn’s telephone conversation with Kislyak. But they did not show it to Flynn and proceeded to ask Flynn what he said to Kislayk.
Why ask if you have the transcript. The answer is to create a perjury trap. Comey did this and then his pal Mueller prosecuted and persecuted Flynn to a coerced guilty plea. To his credit, Barr appointed US Attorney Jeff Jensen to review the Flynn case. Jensen reported that Flynn should not have been prosecuted. Barr then moved to dismiss the prosecution. This was Barr’s finest moment.
Given all this you would think Barr, and the so-called Republicans and suburban independents, would understand Trump’s frustration, and have some empathy. Hillary, Comey, McCabe, and their Media pals engaged in an insurrection using the FBI and the media to try to bring down a duly elected president. They manufactured evidence to accuse Trump of colluding with Russia to win the election and did everything possible to derail his presidency. They viewed themselves as the “resistance” which means they did not accept the results of the 2016 election.
Barr represents the Republicans who are offended by Trump’s tweets and behavior, whatever that means, and believe they are better than those who vote for Trump. They prefer the Bushies who just smile at insults, did nothing to secure the border, started useless wars that resulted in the deaths and injuries to our servicemen, and drained our treasury. But they do not send out tweets or insult McCain and Powell.
Why did Barr write this book? I suspect he wants to explain and excuse his stint as Trump’s Attorney General to his Bush Republican friends and those “suburban independents” who gave us Joey Biden, the worst president. I doubt Merrick Garland will write a book describing the mental state, or lack therof, of Joey.
Barr did some fine service as Trump’s Attorney General. He is a smart, accomplished attorney. The personal attacks on Trump, Rudy, and others serve only to appease the Bush Republicans and the Media.

People who are more stuck on appearances are not much of an ally. Barr made that claim about the Attorney General and US Attorneys not being equipped to dig out election fraud, don’t seem to understand that they are for the enforcement of all the laws in the Federal Register, which include election laws.
Then again, with people, like Barr, some things are about appearances. He could have been an outstanding Attorney General.
He criticized Trump’s election attorneys which implies the attorneys could have done a better job and taken other approaches and arguments. If so, Barr must have suspected some fraud and irregularities that he should have brought to the attention of Trump and his attorneys to investigate.
It is no help to say the attorneys did not do a good job when you could have given an opinion about what to do.
“Hillary, Comey, McCabe, and their Media pals engaged in an insurrection using the FBI and the media to try to bring down a duly elected president. Exactly. Barr realized that the democrats were using the US Department of Justice as a political tool against Trump, and thought it was wrong to use the department for partisan purposes. The problem is he failed to realize that the left was also using the local district attorney’s offices and several secretary of state offices as political weapons, and failed to used his office not as a partisan response, based as one designed to promote the guarantees of the Constitution and the rule of law.
Your are right.
At the end of 2020 Barr was more interested in “protecting his reputation” with the Swamp, and did not want to help Trump on the election issues.
Barr could have spoke to give an opinion on how the Constitution was violated by states such as Pennsylvania where the Pa Supreme Court re-wrote the elections laws. Instead Barr attacked the Trump lawyers for arguing that some of the election machines were not accurate. He knew the real issues and should have spoken about them. Easy to criticize but difficult to do the right thing,.
Too bad, I saw Barr speak in the early 90’s and he was impressive.
He is the type of Republican , like Bush and McCain, more comfortable attacking other Republicans instead of Dems.
