The Entirely Avoidable Food Crisis

The Entirely Avoidable Food Crisis, by Citizen Writer, Michael Kahn

Avoidable Food CrisisPresident Biden himself warned of upcoming food shortages in the United States. The UN warns that 345 million face starvation worldwide. This is an avoidable food crisis; the United States can feed all of these people and more.

The answer can be summed up in a single word: Corn.

How? Assuming 2,000 calories per day, a person needs 730,000 calories per year. At 1,650 calories per pound, a ton of corn can feed 4.52 people for a year. If there were 155 million tons of corn available to feed people, it would provide a full 2,000 calories a day for 700 million people. If they already have some food but are in need of about another 1,000 calories, that’s enough food to eliminate hunger for 1.4 billion people. If they’re getting 2/3 of that 2,000 calories already, then that corn would eliminate hunger for 2.1 billion people.

One might think there aren’t 155 million tons of corn not already used to feed people and livestock, but that’s not correct. The problem is, President Biden and all the other environmental fanatics would rather people starve by the millions than make this corn available to them. You see, we use 155 million tons of corn each year to produce the ethanol that we blend with our gasoline. Under President Trump, we were not only the world’s largest producer of oil, but we had reached energy independence. Given proper incentives and an end to government obstruction, our energy companies would be able to return to Trump-era roduction and increase it by the 11% needed to replace the ethanol we’re burning in our cars’ engines. This would also improve mileage by a little bit (about 3%).

Some people will insist that the corn used for ethanol production isn’t fit for human consumption, but that’s also not true. No, it’s not sweet corn, so it’s not the corn that will be served up next to the barbecue and mashed potatoes. It’s called dent corn (named for the dented kernels), and it’s the same corn used to make Bourbon, corn syrup, corn oil, corn tortillas, grits, hominy, and myriad other things.

That corn must be paid for. Farmers who grow corn will stop if they’re not paid. As of 5 October 2022, the price of corn is $350 per ton, so 155 million tons would cost a bit over $54 billion. The Department of Education, a cabinet department that should have been eliminated a long time ago, has an annual budget of about $74 billion. Can anyone truthfully claim that education in this nation has improved since President Carter created the Departement of Education?

All of this would eliminate a counter-productive federal department, put tens of thousands of Americans back to work in the oil industry (at the cost of about 4,000 non-productive federal bureaucrat jobs), provide full nutrition for at least 345 million people on the brink of starvation, and reduce federal spending by about $20 billion. It’s just made of win.
