In the dusty corridors of military command center in a third world crap hole, where the clatter of keyboards mingled with the smell of stale coffee, I served my time as a military analyst—a number-crunching wizard in the service of Democracy. Deployed as a math geek research analyst in the company of a certain prominent political figure today, I soon learned a bitter truth: numbers don’t lie, but military analysts? Well, they often have to.
We were a dedicated team, spending endless hours poring over data, simulations, and rigorous analyses. Our sweat-soaked Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint slides were meant to be beacons of rational decision-making, guiding the course of action. Yet, our glorious leader had different plans. It wasn’t about logic; it was about politics.
He’d saunter into the room, brimming with the self-assurance of a demagogue followed by 10-15 minions, and casually discard our meticulously crafted PowerPoint presentation like yesterday’s news. In its place? Decisions that would make even a logic-defying oracle raise an eyebrow. But who were we to argue? Ours was not to reason why, ours was to fabricate “Post-Decision Analysis Support.” We made up that term…
Picture this: an Orwellian exercise where we, the disillusioned underlings, were tasked with the unenviable job of making the inexplicable seem rational. The leader’s whim was gospel, and our reports were tailored not to illuminate the truth, but to cloak the political expediency of his decisions.
It was Clausewitz who once spat truths from the annals of military strategy: “War is merely an extension of political means.” Little did I fathom that this quote from the 1860s would echo so fervently in the halls of our supposedly rational military industrial complex in the late 2000’s. Our service wasn’t to truth or logic; it was to shape narratives, to fit data into political fables, and to mold reality to match the leader’s whims. In that world, the only thing that mattered was not accuracy or wisdom but the smooth symphony of numbers orchestrated to fit the conductor’s tune—a tune that held no allegiance to truth or common sense.
