No Virginia. We are NOT a Democracy.

We need to clear something up. I hear the word *democracy* used all the time to describe the governmental system of the USA. The fact is that representative government and participation of the citizens in the government through voting for those representatives does not necessarily equal democracy. The USA has never been a “one person-one vote” democracy.

The founders and framers were smart, and they understood that “one person-one vote democracy” for all citizens would be disastrous. In fact, at the Constitutional Convention, the Connecticut Compromise established up front that our country would NOT be a democracy.

No where in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution is the word democracy to be found. What is found is the word REPUBLICAN. The Constitution was intended to establish a REPUBLICAN form of government, meaning one without a monarch.

The USA is a republic with limited democratic features that allow all citizens to participate in government at its most fundamental level via the vote. These democratic features are balanced by un-democratic ones, such as the aforementioned Connecticut Compromise.

However, not all republics have representative & participatory forms of government. Fascist China is a republic; it is not a monarchy, constitutional or otherwise. Russia is a republic; although Putin is a despotic dictator, he is not a monarch.

So, be very careful when using the word democracy in association with the USA, because we are not now and never have been one. The best way to describe our nation is as a Constitutional Republic with a representative and participatory form of government that has both democratic and un-democratic features.
