Book Burning 2.0

Just recently, I wrote an article on “Liberty Under Law- or Tyranny Under Taboo,” posted to AFNN on 27 April. The article had a photo of the infamous “Rev.” Jim Jones at the top, and when I went to post the link on Facebook (aka “Fascist Book”) I was, literally in a blink of an eye, blocked out as having posted an item supportive of something “hateful.” Of course, I appealed. Yeah… right.

Welcome to Germany, 1930s. Welcome to Book Burning 2.0.

It is amazing how ignorant and stupid people really are, even those in authority. Odds are that not a single one of them, save for a select few, even understand that they are reliving a sordid past. Naturally, the Facebook algorithm had no clue what was in the article. All it saw was a well-known photo of a mass murderer.

But what was really more galling was that Facebook slammed me with restrictions, even though I had no idea that a photo of Jim Jones went against their “standards.” I felt like a little kid having been unjustly punished by his parents because I did something that I didn’t even know was wrong. Even more infuriating, is that many folks today encounter this very thing, both at work and in dealing with our government, let alone on Facebook.

I doubt I would have any trouble posting a photo of Cambodia’s Pol Pot, Communist China’s Mao Tse-tung, or the Soviet Union’s “Uncle Joe” Stalin. And I’m sure I could post links to groups like Planned Parenthood (aka “Planned Barenhood”) with no difficulty at all.

Jim Jones is a despicable cretin, but so were many others in history, or even many people alive today. When a computer algorithm bans one item from discussion but not the another, this tells us much about the selective bias of the people who set the algorithms. One wonders who or what will be banned next by the good folks of Facebook.

As for the photo of Jones, perhaps instead we should have used a photo of Klaus Schwab.
