When Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the suspension of his campaign, he gave a speech that every Democrat voter should listen to. He called out not only the corruption of his former party, but also the government which the Democrats have weaponized. He was particularly animated about the corruption of our medical oversight agencies (FDA, CDC, NIH, etc.).
Kennedy pointed out that under their leadership, the United States has become the unhealthiest country in the world, with two-thirds of Americans suffering chronic disease. He blames bad lifestyle recommendations; toxins in foods and the environment; and medical advice focused on pharmacology rather than a holistic approach to health.
I don’t disagree that our medical institutions need radical reform; but the problems may not be toxins, medications, and lifestyles. There may also be a substantial amount of medical deception. We may be suffering from chronic misdiagnosis rather than chronic disease.
It’s a scientific principle that the act of making observations affects the outcome of the observations. Sometimes the effect is negligible, but at other times it renders the conclusions erroneous. For example: when an experimental subject is being observed, he changes his behavior because he knows he’s being watched. There is also a problem when those making observations have a vested interest in the outcome. Their judgement becomes subjective, and they observe what they want to see, not what is reality. That’s why drug trials are done with a double-blind approach – in which neither the subject, nor the observer knows what the treatment is. But unfortunately, the statistics cited by Kennedy were not based on double-blind experiments, but on the observations of biased bureaucrats and doctors.
When our son was 7, my wife and I were called in for a parent/teacher conference. His teacher informed us that she was certain he was suffering from ADHD and referred us to a doctor for formal diagnosis. After a battery of tests in which our son tested “normal,” the doctor diagnosed him as ADHD positive and prescribed medication. He justified his diagnosis saying that he factored in the teacher’s opinion – as a trained professional who had maximum exposure to our son.
We declined the prescription and opted for behavioral training instead. Our son’s teacher agreed to rate his attentiveness (on a scale of 1 to 5) at the end of each day. Our hope was that he would learn to manage his behavior and meet the teacher’s expectations.
However, my wife and I learned something that neither the teacher nor the doctor realized. Their judgment was biased. Being an engineer, I naturally plotted our son’s daily scores. It was apparent that he had good days, and occasional bad days. After several months the plot revealed that his “bad days” had a rhythm which my wife recognized. She realized that the days on which the teacher observed the worst ADHD behavior were the days on which she was experiencing her menstrual cycle. She was judging him not based on his behavior, but on other factors in her life. Her observations were flawed, and the doctor was willing to prescribe mind altering drugs based her observations.
We concluded that our son’s teacher wanted him drugged into docility for her own convenience, and the doctor was happy to facilitate it. We discontinued the daily scoring, never discussed ADHD again, and he is now a productive (undrugged) adult.
Are we experiencing an explosion of chronic disease as Kennedy suggests, or an explosion of chronic disease diagnosis? They are not the same. Both indicate corruption of our institutions, but due to different root causes. The former is caused by exposure to toxins and bad lifestyle choices. The latter is caused by diagnosticians who are incentivized to find disease where there is none. The latter is caused when
- A doctor gains a lifelong customer by prescribing a drug, rather than suggesting lifestyle changes.
- Doctors attributed hospital stays to COVID related issues, because the government subsidized COVID treatments.
- NIH doctors promote a drug for every sniffle, because they receive a royalty for pharmacological solutions.
- The CDC uses an explosion of chronic disease to justify massive increases in its budget.
I agree completely with Kennedy that our medical institutions have been corrupted. One need only observe Anthony Fauci’s deceitful guidance during the pandemic to see that. I also share Kennedy’s concern that our health may be in jeopardy due to the drugs our medical institutions are recommending. For example: I found myself in atrial fibrillation after taking the COVID vaccine.
However, to root out the corruption – without incentivizing new forms of misbehavior – we need to understand what the statistics are telling us. Without questioning the people who collect the statistics, we can’t know if our health is declining, or if we’re being told it’s declining by people with a vested interest in us being unhealthy.
