Keep Me From Stumbling

Last week, I had a total knee replacement, and this week has been eye-opening. I expected the pain and inconvenience, but what I didn’t fully realize is that, for at least a few days, I had to be totally dependent on someone else to take care of me. My husband Mike has been that someone, and he’s done an incredible job.

Sleep is difficult. Using a walker is humbling. Recliners were invented by angels. God is good.

Our church family has been amazing–this doesn’t surprise me, but it’s overwhelming to know that, in addition to the lifted prayers, these folks have been the hands and feet of Jesus in very tangible ways. Food. Phone calls and texts. Visits. The loan of medical equipment. Cards and little gifts (a small pillow that is exactly the right size for elevating my leg).

About a month ago, I joined in a church-wide Bible study called Experiencing God, by Henry, Richard, and Mike Blackaby. It’s a life-changer, and anything that I could write about it would wildly insufficient. In brief, studying Experiencing God is helping me come to know God, to recognize His voice, and to understand His will for my life.

This “knee escapade” has provided plenty of time for prayer and introspection. And plenty of time to focus on experiencing God. I hope you will take the time to check out the book (and I hope that you don’t have to have a knee replacement).

“Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the one I praise.” (Jeremiah 17:14)

“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.” (Psalm 103:2-3)

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

To close, here’s a prayer from the Book of Jude which seems particularly appropriate in my current situation:

“Now to Him who is able to keep [me] from stumbling, and to present [me] faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.” (Jude 1:24-25)
