Grok says only Mississippi recognized Confederate History Month this year. Confederate History is a political pinata for the Left. Someday, when no one acknowledges there is even such a thing as Confederate History, the Human Secularist Totalitarians and their race-pimping cadre will have to find another fundraiser. With or without Confederate History months, the South as a regional sub-culture remains. Like every other culture in the history of the world, the South is evolving.
The South, as well as America and Virginia, began with the first permanent settlement of English-speaking People in Jamestown in 1607. They brought England as a culture and consensus worldview with them. The whole of history as it had unfolded through time in one place, England, came to a new place – America.
By 1776, there was a nascent, consensus American culture. Americans shared a consensus Biblical worldview. Their internal disagreements ranged between the boundaries of Jefferson to Hamilton.
Concurrently, there were four regional sub-cultures by 1776. Anglican Tidewater South, Puritan New England, Quaker with German Dissidents plus Dutch Middle Atlantic, and Scot-Irish Presbyterian Appalachian. The sub-cultures didn’t like each other. They’d warred with each other back in the British Isles. Nine per cent of Americans spoke German.
The regional differences mattered because the sub-cultures were different. (And, no, it had nothing to do with slavery.)
The Absolutist Puritans in New England were a “My way or the highway” culture. If you disagreed with a Puritan, you were either ignorant, evil, or insane. It’s the same if you disagree with a Liberal New Englander today.
In Appalachia, the Presbyterian – soon to become Baptist and Methodist in the First and Second Great Awakenings – Scot-Irish were a family3, faith, and freedom culture. They were “live and let live” until you threaten their family, faith, or freedom. If you threaten truly their family, faith, or freedom, they kill you.
Fast forward to 2025. Those sub-cultures exist today. Their culture commands – shapes people the same as before.
One difference is that the majority in New England walked away from a Biblical Christian worldview and embraced the worldview of the French Revolution’s Human Secularist Totalitarianism.
Another key difference is outcome from the devastating war, 1861-65, when the disagreements came to blows. (Slavery could be found across the issues which divided the regions, but it wasn’t what the Self-Righteous Cause claims it to be.)
One in four military-age, Southern White Males died in the war. Many came home missing limbs. That loss alone was horrific. A monument in York County, Virginia lists more local names dead defending Virginia from invasion than all wars added together – including Bacon’s Rebellion.
The magnitude of the War and its consequences dwarf every event since 1607. For that reason alone “Confederate” history matters.
Then, Reconstruction was brutal for all Southerners. The racist Yankees kept Blacks in the South while the Carpetbaggers and Scalawags stole everything they could for over a decade.
There was no Marshall Plan for the South, only plunder for the victors. That meant rebuilding an economy where all the money went to zero. It meant 3 generations of financial poverty for almost all Southerners. Wealth was measured and passed on in Christian faith and in family ties.
Very little changed year to year. Truly, the hundred years from 1861 to 1965 created the South as it is. Not the slavery times before.
The cauldron of war and decades of punishing poverty forged Blacks and Whites with all the variations of Southern sub-culture from the Tejanos to the Cajuns to the Ozarks to deep South to Appalachia to Tidewater to the Florida sub-Tropic into one solid South. One regional sub-culture separated by race, but united by much more. The Bible Belt links the South from one end to the other.
Then, waves of immigrants from outside the South and the U.S. followed the widespread use of air conditioning. The late Lewis Grizzard wrote about its damnable effects. But, here they are.
In some places, like Northern Virginia, North Carolina and Texas’s big cities, Atlanta, and much of Florida “move ins” and “come here’s” outnumber the indigenous Southerners. Yet, Southern Culture exists everywhere there are Southerners knowing its history and living as its presence.
Confederate History month is symbolic for cognizant Southerners in ways that Yankees, other foreigners, and Liberals don’t get. The Southerners who can still name the names of their ancestors who served, their regiments, and their battles – and often other personal, oral history from “The War” – share the pride of their People.
Their People lived what William Faulkner wrote in “The Unvanquished” when “There ain’t nothing left now but to endure.” Southerners of both races know their People endured with courage, pride, and honor. They rebuilt everything themselves.
After 1965, the victory of the Civil Rights movement removed de jure segregation to benefit all Southerners. Soon after, the welfare state spiritually impoverished all Southerners dependent on it. Now, Cultural Marxism (Human Secularist Totalitarianism) and Islamist Totalitarianism threaten all Southerners because they both seek to destroy Christianity and Western Civilization.
Finally, Southern Culture is evolving to identify less with The War as fewer Southerners have ancestral memories of it. The South as a culture is moving to an Evangelical Christian identity, more than the former Confederate identity.
As such, Southern Culture warmly welcomes legal immigrants as they convert to Biblical Christianity. The South influences its resident Christians and Jews to adapt a more Biblical worldview. When attacked, the South will oppose Cultural Marxism and Islam like no others on the planet. (Ask the Indians how that works.)
Finally, Confederate History month points to the role the South may play in saving Western Civilization. In 1940, Winston Churchill and the UK stood alone to save Western Civilization. Later, Churchill commented in his History of the English-Speaking Peoples that the Army of Northern Virginia was the most devoutly Christian Army to ever march.
The descendants of those Confederate soldiers are the core of the South as an American Sub-Culture.
Their, our, Southern worldview is the same as the Biblical Worldview of the American Revolution. It’s spoken with a diminishing Southern accent, but held close to the heart. Hearts comforted and inspired by an in-dwelling Holy Spirit may lead future Southerners to soldier again – to liberate Europe from Islam.
