We’re living in an age where statements once considered common sense are now controversial. To say that men and women are biologically distinct, or that children shouldn’t be exposed to sexually charged material, or that free speech applies to everyone — these used to be unifying ideas. Today, they’re met with outrage, cancellation, or accusations of hate. What changed?
The answer isn’t simply political. It’s psychological — and historical. What we’re witnessing is the widespread effect of cognitive dissonance, amplified by modern culture, and wrapped in the moral language of what many now call the “woke mind virus.”
Coined by psychologist Leon Festinger, cognitive dissonance refers to the mental discomfort people feel when they hold two or more contradictory beliefs or when their actions conflict with their self-image.
Rather than resolve this tension by changing their beliefs, many people double down, deny reality, or reframe morality. Over time, this becomes not just personal confusion, but societal disorder.
The term “woke” began with good intentions — awareness of social injustices. But in its modern form, “wokeness” has evolved into a rigid, often illogical belief system that demands full compliance while constantly shifting its own definitions of right and wrong.
Examples include:
• Promoting gender fluidity while insisting we “follow the science.”
• Advocating for racial equality while reintroducing segregation under new terms like “safe spaces.”
• Demanding tolerance for all views — except those deemed “harmful,” a label applied to anything that challenges the narrative.
This is cognitive dissonance on a cultural scale, where truth is not just ignored but intentionally inverted to preserve the illusion of moral superiority.
The Bible addressed this condition long before modern psychology had a name for it:
“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;
Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
(Isaiah 5:20, NKJV)
This isn’t just poetic language — it’s a warning about the psychological and spiritual blindness that comes when people willfully reject what is true.
The modern confusion isn’t new. History is filled with examples of societies that collapsed under the weight of moral inversion and dissonance:
The French Revolution
It began with cries for liberty and justice, but quickly devolved into chaos, bloodshed, and the guillotine. The same mob that shouted for freedom soon executed anyone who disagreed with their version of it.
Nazi Germany
A society with high levels of education and technological advancement embraced a genocidal ideology by redefining evil as good. Propaganda replaced truth. Science was twisted to support racism. Millions justified the unthinkable.
Communist Romania
Under Ceausescu, truth became a crime. Citizens were expected to believe obvious lies — that the economy was booming, that their leader was a genius, that there was no oppression. The result was mass suffering, starvation, and surveillance — all to uphold a false reality.
In each case, the public abandonment of truth was propped up by cognitive dissonance and fear. To admit the truth would mean facing the horror of complicity — and so most didn’t.
The Apostle Paul describes a culture not unlike ours in his letter to the Romans:
“Professing to be wise, they became fools…
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,
God gave them over to a debased mind,
to do those things which are not fitting.”
(Romans 1:22, 28, NKJV)
What does a “debased mind” look like? It’s not necessarily evil in appearance — it often believes it’s doing good. But it’s morally disoriented, emotionally reactive, and intolerant of correction.
Sound familiar?
The “woke mind virus” isn’t a scientific diagnosis, but it captures a real phenomenon: a cultural condition where truth is sacrificed for acceptance, and contradiction is embraced as virtue. The Bible, psychology, and history all agree — when a society rejects truth, confusion follows. And from confusion comes collapse.
The question isn’t whether this is happening. The question is: Will we have the courage to see it — and the integrity to stand against it?
