“The United States is under attack. We have successfully shot down hundreds of ballistic missiles coming from the Russian mainland and their fleet of coastal nuclear submarines. One nuclear bomb, headed for Chicago, escaped our defenses but was knocked off course where it exploded in rural North Dakota. As your President, I have ordered….” Photos and eyewitness accounts would accompany this all-media broadcast.
Of course, this hasn’t happened…yet. If nothing else, this could unite, al la, Pearl Harbor, our diametrically opposed political nation…or at least make a great movie that might jar hawks and doves to revisit current Plans A and B.
Let’s say, OUR government DID explode a nuke in a rural location and did make the above broadcast and claims. With AI, news media and truths of each party claiming hoaxes, lies, concealed evidence, government secrecy and both sides twisting and spinning everything – we have become accustomed to believing – or not – what we wish. Suppose the broadcast is real, but the facts are engineered by our government to unite us and give reason to “retaliate” and obliterate a real nuclear threat? Is it beyond the imagination? Let’s pretend it did happen – maybe it should.
