First, there was Sodom and Gomorrah, where God rained down fire and brimstone. Fast forward a few millennia, and apparently, the Almighty has updated His judgment toolkit: mud bogs, flash floods, dust storms, and 50-mph winds.
Enter Burning Man, the weeklong desert bacchanal where Silicon Valley millionaires dress up like post-apocalyptic Bedouins, install giant neon squid sculptures, and call it “radical self-expression.” If Sherlock Holmes were around today, he’d raise an eyebrow over his magnifying glass and say: “Elementary, my dear Watson. When heaven sends a monsoon to a desert rave, God’s not signing the RSVP.”
The parallels are hard to miss. The Bible had its tales of orgies, idols, and a city so decadent that God flipped the breaker switch. Today? Same script, different stage. Instead of golden calves, we’ve got ten-story laser-shooting robots. Instead of Lot’s wife turning into a pillar of salt, we’ve got influencers turning into unpaid mud wrestlers.
And let’s not forget the irony: Burning Man worships “the Man” by literally burning a man—as though sending up smoke signals to heaven saying, “Look at us, we’re totally fine down here!” Then a dust storm rolls through like a divine slap, sending half the camp scrambling for their overpriced RVs.
Is this divine judgment, or just poor festival planning? Hard to say. But one thing’s clear: if the Book of Genesis ever gets a modern sequel, it might include a chapter called “And lo, the people of Silicon Valley gathered in the wilderness, and the Lord turned their glitter into mud.”
Maybe the lesson isn’t subtle: don’t host a festival of hedonism and nihilism in a dry lakebed cursed by Old Testament weather patterns. Or at least, pack extra rain boots.
