Part I – The Missed Alarms
Every major disaster starts with a whisper. January 6th was no different. The FBI, DHS, and Capitol Police all had warnings — real, written reports — that online chatter was turning into plans. The Norfolk field office even sent an urgent memo the day before. And what did Washington do? Shrugged. Memos were filed, boxes were checked, and the system moved at the speed of paperwork.
When the crowd gathered, the fences were low, the Guard was still waiting on permission, and decision-makers were arguing about optics. “We don’t want to look militarized,” someone said. They were more afraid of bad press than bad actors. Bureaucracy has a way of valuing image over outcome.
This wasn’t a failure of intelligence; it was a failure of courage. A thousand middle-managers playing it safe instead of sounding the alarm. Everyone assumed someone else was in charge — that’s how every preventable tragedy happens.
It’s tempting to call it incompetence, but that gives it too much grace. The truth is, our institutions are allergic to responsibility. They fear being wrong more than they fear being unprepared. So they wait until it’s too late, then blame “systemic failure.”
That’s what the Senate reports said: coordination problems, lack of communication, poor threat assessment. Fancy words for “nobody wanted to stick their neck out.” It’s not just the Capitol — it’s the culture of government itself.
January 6th wasn’t proof of conspiracy; it was proof of decay. When the gears of the machine rust, even obvious danger can roll right past unnoticed. The alarms were ringing. We just stopped listening.
The lesson? You can’t outsource vigilance. Freedom demands watchmen who aren’t afraid to shout “fire” before the smoke fills the room.
