Hey, remember that wild farmer strike in the Netherlands a couple years back? Who is Mark Rutte?
Mark Rutte is a tall, bicycle-riding career politician from The Hague who looks like he just stepped out of a corporate HR seminar. He was the Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 2010 to 2024, leading the so-called People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) — which sounds conservative, but in Europe, “liberal” means pro-business, pro-EU, and socially progressive.
He’s not some hard-charging nationalist. He’s a manager. Think Joe Biden with better hair and a bicycle, not Donald Trump with a red hat and a Twitter feed.
Rutte is a technocrat — a man who believes that global problems can be solved with spreadsheets, carbon credits, and endless committees. His party supports open borders, climate regulations, and NATO solidarity. Basically, the opposite of Trump’s “America First” populism.

When the Dutch courts ordered Rutte’s government to slash nitrogen emissions, his cabinet came up with a plan that would have bought out or forcibly closed thousands of family farms. They claimed it was about protecting the environment. The farmers saw it as a death sentence for rural life.
What followed was pure chaos:
• Tractors blocking highways and city halls.
• Massive protests in The Hague and Amsterdam.
• A political earthquake that gave birth to the BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) — a new pro-farmer populist party that embarrassed Rutte’s entire establishment.
Rutte didn’t budge. Instead, he doubled down — all in the name of “climate responsibility.” To the Dutch farmers, it felt like globalism crushing tradition.

Fast-forward to 2024. The same man who couldn’t keep peace with his own farmers is now sitting in Brussels as Secretary General of NATO — the alliance responsible for keeping peace in Europe and, possibly, starting World War III if things go sideways.
Let that sink in.
The man who sparked a national protest movement over cow farts now holds the launch codes to Europe’s collective defense.
Rutte’s appointment made the global elite swoon — he’s everything they love: polite, polished, predictable, and perfectly obedient to the EU narrative. But to anyone paying attention, it’s another sign that bureaucrats and technocrats now run the free world, not leaders who understand working people, or in Rutte’s case, farmers.

So yes — Mark Rutte is a “liberal,” but in the European sense:
• Economically capitalist,
• Socially progressive,
• Deeply globalist,
• And allergic to populism.
If Trump is a street fighter, Rutte’s a PowerPoint general. If Trump says “Make America Great Again,” Rutte says “Make Multilateral Cooperation Sustainable.”
And now he’s in charge of NATO — the world’s most powerful military alliance — at a time when Russia’s on the move, China’s flexing, and the world’s nuclear tension is climbing faster than a Dutch bike uphill.

The man who couldn’t convince Dutch farmers to trust him is now supposed to convince 32 nations to trust each other under threat of war.
Maybe it’ll work.
Maybe it won’t.
But here’s the punchline:
If the next world war starts in Europe, the same guy who picked a fight with the farmers might be the one picking a fight with the Russians.
