According to a recent CBS News survey, a bipartisan majority of Americans would prefer that ICE use less harsh tactics in the enforcement of federal immigration laws. Being ever responsive to the wishes of Americans – so long as Americans wish the Democrats to remain in power – Senator Chuck “The Grillmaster” Schumer is thinking about a repeat of “shutdown theater.”
Chucky’s thinking it would be a swell mid-term strategy, to shut the federal government down again, unless the Republicans agree to major ICE reforms in the current budget bill. He apparently recognizes that the time to have a major policy debate is during budgeting discussions rather than the campaign season.
It has apparently gone unnoticed by Chucky that we conservatives especially love the “order” part of “law and order.” If ICE can give us more “national sovereignty control,” with less “riot control,” we’ll be all over it. Since we all want “government by the governed” with as little conflict as possible, this should be an area where we can head off another shutdown with just a modicum of creative thinking.
Hence, I’ve put on my thinking cap, and come up with a few ideas for bipartisan alignment. Let’s write into the DHS budget:
- ICE shall be prohibited from enforcement operations in courthouses, unless courthouse officials are engaged in violation of federal immigration law – like sneaking illegal aliens out the back door in violation of ICE detainers.
- ICE officers shall be prohibited from wearing masks, except during flu season, subzero temperatures, or when they have been doxed, or received death threats.
- ICE tactical teams are prohibited from conducting neighborhood raids, unless local authorities are inviting illegal aliens to hide in otherwise peaceful neighborhoods – typically referred to as “sanctuary” policies.
- ICE is prohibited from using lethal crowd control measures, unless they have been judicially prohibited from using non-lethal crowd control measures.
- ICE is prohibited from using military protection (i.e. National Guard) unless under threat of armed ambush by anti-democratic insurrectionists.
- ICE is prohibited from enforcing any statutes not passed by a constitutionally compliant legislative process (i.e. passed by representatives of people who say the laws are illegal).
- ICE must immediately cease and desist the enforcement of any federal statutes repealed by a constitutionally compliant legislative process – I note the mobs aren’t threatening to vote the Dems out for not doing.
- ICE must use minimally invasive enforcement tactics, and only escalate as deemed necessary (per the authority of the Secretary of Homeland Security) to assert the electoral will of the majority over the resistance will of the minority.
If that’s too wordy, it could be shortened to: ICE shall conduct itself as any other law enforcement agency does when it receives support rather than resistance. That should satisfy Chucky. Now let’s get that outrageously bloated budget passed.
