Apparently, the Iranians would like to observe “bridge and powerplant” day. Maybe when they eventually emerge from the rubble, they’ll make it a National Day of Remembrance.
First the Iranians said the Hormuz Straight was open, but only to ships paying a bribe toll. Then it was open, except for a few misplaced mines. Finally, after lengthy negotiations, the Straight is open to all commercial traffic again, except for the ships the Iranians continue to fire on. Now our delegation is headed back to Islamabad, to continue negotiating the terms of a surrender, which we know Iran will agree to, and then break within a nanosecond of Trump claiming success. Clearly, we’re going to need to continue the Clausewitz option for a bit longer: policy by other means than diplomacy. [Yes, I know he said it a bit differently.]
Kevin McCullough had a great article last week over at Townhall, What Stupid Ayatollahs. He wrote that the Iranian officials approached the peace negotiations as if they held the position of power – demanding concessions and even reparations. Mr. McCullough noted that they have failed to see that the current U.S. leadership is very different from past Presidents.
McCullough concludes:
They stall. They reject. They posture. They delay. And in doing so, they reveal something that should alarm anyone watching closely: They don’t understand the room they’re in.
[Emphasis added]
If the Iranians are “misreading the room,” how dangerous would it be for a nuclear Iran to “misread the world”? Could such a misunderstanding eventually lead to a nuclear exchange?
But is their misinterpretation of reality so profound that they’re not stupid, but instead delusional?
Let’s say Molly is a non-binary schizophrenic who talks to chickens (i.e. xe is delusional). Nobody pays much attention to Molly, because xe’s just a nut that wears mini-skirts, thinks xe’s sexy, and discusses current events with poultry.
But that all changes one day, when Molly steals xis granddad’s hunting rifle and heads down to the local Piggly Wiggly to kill anyone shopping for frozen nuggets.
The grocery being in Texas, Molly is quickly subdued by a mob of heavily armed shoppers and held for the police, with minor cuts, scrapes, and contusions. However, Molly is eventually found incompetent to stand trial and is committed to a long-term mental care facility instead.
47 years pass, and the docs decide that Molly is no longer a threat to society, even though he still talks to chickens. They need the bedspace, so he is released.
Being deemed “cured,” Molly, who goes by Max now, petitions the court to get his grandpa’s .30 cal. Winchester back – for self-defense. How irrational would it be for society to return a weapon to a lunatic that converses with chickens?
The crazy Iranian Twelvers have been slaughtering people for 47 years, because they consider it their divine mission to facilitate the return of the 12th Imam by triggering a global apocalypse. In response, our military has reduced them to scurrying around in the dark like cockroaches to stay alive, yet their delegation arrived in Islamabad talking to chickens – denying reality by acting like they had won. They demanded reparations, control of the Persian Gulf, and retention of their nuclear program – for self-defense don’t you know. How irrational would it be for the world to allow them to continue pursuing atomic weapons?
President Trump didn’t start this war – Iran did. But he does seem to be the only world leader who accepts reality as it is – not as he wishes it to be. War is an ugly business, but Iran cannot be allowed to retain the ability to wreak mayhem in the world. Not when “mayhem” moves from IEDs to nuclear weapons.
