The United States of America is 250 years old this year, because for the year before, the U.S. Army (The Continental Line) was in the field fighting for freedom. This Nation forged by war is remarkably un-militaristic. Yet, the free-thinking, independent, faithfully Christian, roughly half the country is fiercely pro-military. Freedom-loving Americans expect the well-disciplined, tightly run Army to be the best in the world and stay in their lane. Fight wars and win.
Which is why the cancerous creep of Cultural Marxism crushed recruiting. The tiny per cent of America who send their sons and daughters to serve, wouldn’t commit to a second class status in a flawed force.
The good news is the Army is a learning institution. The lessons learned in every conflict are institutionalized. Inevitably, every war provides the challenges which weren’t planned against. Always.
The Army applies its institutional adaptability to changes in war.
[Historians will evaluate if the Army repeated any mistakes from Vietnam in Iraq or Afghanistan. Don’t think so tactically. Our political Civilian authorities – both Republican and Democrat Administrations – may have repeated horrible errors at the operational and strategic levels of war]
The Army is working hard not to let drones create the same paralyzing and mass murdering effect that the machine gun and artillery had in World War I. The Ukraine War is a testing lab for military technologies like the Spanish Civil War.
From the Root Reforms before World War I to the Louisiana Maneuvers before World War II to the Howze Board’s Air Cavalry before Vietnam to DePuy/Starry/Gorman’s Training Revolution and Airland Battle before Operation Desert Storm to the Battle Labs/Army After Next Wargames/Digitization before 9-11 and the 20 year Global War on Terrorism, the U.S. Army advanced the unity of technology, operational, and organizational concepts to become the Masters of Land Warfare.
This 251st Birthday – after the incredible Special Operation in Venezuela – there are some challenges to address before the next big conflict – War with the CCP, Jacquerie across Europe, or October 7th Attack in the U.S. Homeland.
- Post Weapons of Mass Destruction. Wargame and exercise the worst case on “leakers” getting through our limited anti-missile defenses. Get key lessons on Continuity of Government and true National recovery.
- Consider bio weapons, like the Wuhan Covid Virus, tailored for DNA of selected ethnicities.
- Consider wave attacks, not a single shot.
- Consider standing up Army induction and training after all the infrastructure is destroyed.
- Long War. Wargame and exercise what a 5 to 20 year war demands. Special emphasis on the industrial capacity and personnel issues.
- Consider how the “unfit for military service” majority of every youthful cohort could be trained and used in the war effort.
- Civil War Across Europe. Wargame and table top exercise when a Peasants’ Revolt – a Jacquerie – becomes civil war – the many military contingencies for the Army.
- Consider operations as part of NATO force and independently.
- Consider huge Noncombatant Evacuation Operation of Americans – military dependents, tourists, business, and ex-pats from war zones. While defending U.S. bases.
- Securing UK and French nuclear weapons.
- Assisting NATO Allies with area security to free forces to deal with millions in No-Go Zones.
- Supporting NATO Allies with pacifying No-Go Zones with populations from 5k to 100k.
- October 7th Attack in U.S. Homeland. Wargame and exercise different enemies conducting such an attack.
- Consider implications for serving soldiers who are ethnically or religiously affiliated with the enemy.
- Extremely Stressed Leadership. Wargame and exercise sudden loss of communications, sudden mass casualties with no Medevac, loss of logistical support in tactical situations.
- Consider extra time at National Training Center and in local training to do complete iterations absent current C5ISR.
- Consider if leadership training needs to change to deal with sudden catastrophic losses and complete loss of support.
Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Army.
