One of my favorite books of the Bible, the Book of Esther, has often been called the most “godless” book of the Bible because God’s name is never mentioned. At first glance, that seems strange. Yet once you read it, you discover that while God’s name is absent, His fingerprints are everywhere. Every unexpected event, every twist in the story, and every “coincidence” quietly reveals His providence.
Esther lived around 490 BC, near the close of the Old Testament era. Soon after her story came the 400-year intertestamental period, when no new Scripture was written and no prophets spoke. It must have felt as though God had gone silent. Yet even in those quiet years, God was preparing the world for the coming of the Messiah. His silence was never His absence.
Esther’s story itself reads like a gripping novel. An orphaned Jewish girl is raised by her cousin Mordecai. King Xerxes has Queen Vashti removed from the throne, and Esther is chosen to become queen of Persia. She keeps her Jewish heritage secret, as Mordecai instructs.
Then disaster strikes.
Haman, the king’s most powerful advisor, is furious because Mordecai refuses to bow before him. Consumed with hatred, Haman convinces King Xerxes to issue a decree ordering the destruction of every Jew in the empire.
Suddenly, Esther finds herself facing an impossible choice.
The only person who can stop the massacre is the king. But approaching him without an invitation carries a death sentence—unless he extends his golden scepter in mercy.
Terrified, Esther reminds Mordecai of the danger. His reply has echoed through history:
“Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape… And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:13-14)
Those words changed everything.
Esther chose courage over comfort. She fasted, prayed, and walked into the throne room, placing her life entirely in God’s hands.
The king extended his golden scepter.
The Jews were saved. Haman’s evil plot failed. And one courageous act changed the course of history.
Most of us will never stand before a king with our lives hanging in the balance. Yet we all face moments when fear whispers that staying silent is safer than obeying God.
Perhaps there’s a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding because you’re afraid of losing a friendship.
Perhaps there’s a ministry God has been nudging you toward, but you don’t feel qualified.
Perhaps there’s a career opportunity you’ve been afraid to pursue because failure seems too painful.
Or perhaps you’re simply wondering why God placed you in this family, this neighborhood, this church, or this season of history.
Esther reminds us that none of those things are accidents.
The same God who quietly worked behind the scenes in Persia is still arranging circumstances today. Your gifts are not random. Your experiences are not wasted. Even your hardships may become part of someone else’s rescue story.
That doesn’t mean life will always be easy. Esther still had to walk into the throne room. Daniel still entered the lions’ den. David still faced Goliath. Faith doesn’t remove risk; it gives us courage to trust God in the middle of it.
Sometimes we look at the world and wonder if anyone can make a difference anymore. The problems seem too large, the divisions too deep, and the darkness too overwhelming.
But God has never been intimidated by difficult times.
He placed Esther in Persia exactly when she was needed. He placed the early church in the Roman Empire. And He has placed you here—not a century earlier or later, but now.
That means your kindness matters. Your witness matters. Your prayers matter. Your obedience matters.
Perhaps the greatest lesson from Esther is not that she was brave, but that God was faithful.
Even when His name wasn’t spoken, He was present.
Even when His people were afraid, He was working.
Even when the future looked hopeless, His plan was unfolding.
The same is true for you today.
God is not absent from your story. He is already at work behind the scenes, opening doors you cannot yet see and preparing opportunities you have not yet imagined.
So when fear tells you to stay where it’s safe, remember Esther.
God is holding out His golden scepter of grace.
Step forward in faith.
After all, perhaps you have been placed exactly where you are—for such a time as this.
