Jesus, the Talmud, and the Sins of Our Fathers: History Is a Dirty Business
After decades of studying Christianity, I discovered something that genuinely surprised me: the Babylonian Talmud contains a passage describing Jesus Christ being punished in boiling excrement. Yes, it’s actually there. But history is a dirty business, and we’re remarkably good at pretending our ancestors smelled like roses. We don’t apologize for the sins of our fathers, nor should we remain prisoners of their prejudices. Scripture tells us to test all things, not blindly defend our tribe. Ecclesiastes 7:16 even warns against excessive self-righteousness. Perhaps it’s time we stopped judging history from our moral high horses and examined the logs sticking out of our own eyes. Different centuries, different costumes, same fallen humanity.
