A very common Democrat talking point is that most Americans favor some form of “reasonable” gun control. And it is true that most people do. The problem with that is that we know history. If we start with some reasonable laws about firearms, that don’t actually prevent every single murder using a firearm, the left will immediately proceed to unreasonable limits. They will proceed there even if murders with firearms are dramatically reduced or eliminated.
I actually don’t think AR-15s should be sold routinely to 18-year old boys who have no military experience. I have serious reservations about the state of Kansas allowing students to concealed-carry on college campuses. Why? Not because 18-year-olds are irresponsible as a group, but because the 16-21 year old age is the time when mental illness is most likely to show itself in young men. Its also the time when those young men are undergoing a lot of pressure as they move out of the house and into the world. It can be a very hard time, and in a very small number of cases can lead to fatal results. I also support background checks. Even universal background checks. Because if you sell a gun privately to a man you think you know, you may not know he has a restraining order for beating his wife. Or even a felony record.
But. As soon as we pass those reasonable laws, the next thing the liberals will demand is unreasonable laws. They will ban all AR-15s, then they will go after all other semi-automatic firearms. This is not a fear, this is a fact. The Democrats detest the right to bear arms, because they know that in the end the right to bear arms is the only thing standing between them and ruling the country as they see fit.
And those background checks. Sure, felons should not be allowed firearms. Nor those who engage in domestic abuse. But how far should we go. Suppose you have a speeding ticket, should that be grounds for being denied a gun? Obviously not, but just wait. IF we open the door further, the liberals will be looking for any excuse at all to deny the purchase. Speeding, jaywalking, hate speech on Facebook, whatever.
We only need to look at Britain to realize this. They started down the path shortly after WWII, and now they are there. There is no right to bear arms in Britain. When Winston Churchill gave his famous speech about fighting the Germans in every part of the country at the start of WWII, he knew that the British could fight because they had firearms in their homes. Well, they don’t have firearms in their homes any more, and the government is trying to get rid of sharp knives too. And now the British live in socialist country, slowly losing its identity as the government allows immigration from Islamic countries despite the objections of most of the population.
And if you talk to a British politician, they will claim the objections don’t actually exist. Well sure they don’t exist. Legally. Because anyone who objects to the immigration is guilty of hate speech. That is illegal in Britain too. The hate speech laws came in right after Brits lost the right to bear arms. Sound familiar? And pointing out that Muslims have a different culture, different beliefs, and are changing Britain in ways that not everyone likes is hate speech. Telling the hard truth has become illegal in Britain. As it will in any country that bans hate speech. Does that sound familiar? Hello Twitter and Facebook. Both of them routinely call factual statements ‘hate speech.’ Just today I was suspended on Twitter for making a factual statement about mental illness among the LGBTQ+. Roughly 40% are diagnosed with some form of mental illness, but according to Twitter that is hate speech. Now suggest that LGBTQ+ people not be allowed to purchase firearms and you can offend the whole country.
And that is why we must be careful. It may sound like the classic slippery slope fallacious argument. But its not fallacious when you can show the real-world examples of what happens when you start down the slippery slope. So be careful
