Something that is a constant refrain from RINOs, and self-identified moderates, is that GOP candidates lose elections because they are not high quality enough…the myth of weak GOP candidates. Mitch McConnell, RINO Emeritus repeated that quote as justification for not supporting Republican candidates in key races, and several of them lost by margins narrow enough that make it likely that McConnell’s support would have made a winning difference. Leaving aside the question of whether McConnell should have that much power in terms of deciding how the GOP spends its money, the salient question is whether McConnell might have been right. Is it possible that GOP consistently fields candidates who are inferior to their Democrat opponents and are thus the reason why the GOP loses?
The argument that the GOP loses because of the inferiority of its candidates is an extension of the Never Trump GOP version of history which insists that Trump lost the Presidency because he is a flawed candidate. It is quite common to hear from that crowd that “any other GOP candidate could have beaten Biden”. Of course, when asked to name a specific person, they quickly retreat to saying that they do not want to name anyone, but they remain certain that anyone could have beaten Biden. Sure. It was such an easy task that no one even tried, except Trump. Now, the GOP is facing a 2024 election against Biden and once again the same cast of Quislings is saying that Trump should not run because he cannot possibly beat Biden. On the other hand, they are sure than “any other Republican” can get that job done. Interestingly, even though the argument seems similar to the broader contention that GOP candidates lose because they are inferior to their Democrat opponents, it tends to undermine their position when Trump is plainly a superior candidate to Biden by nearly every objective measurement. Traits like education, business success, raising children, providing jobs, not committing crimes, ability to walk, ability to speak, ability to remember his own name, are all wildly in favor of Trump. However, the hatred for Trump in the media, the federal government, the Democrat party, and the education system (Can you say TDS?) is so widespread and virulent that perhaps the triumph of a clearly physically feeble, senile, and corrupt Joe Biden is a one-off example. Surely, the other GOP candidates who lost are much less talented and accomplished than their Democrat opponents.
Well, to make that case one would have to brush off several other GOP losses, not the least of which was victory of the shambling, incoherent, and mentally damaged John Fetterman over Doctor Oz. The result in that race is shocking, but also well covered and documented, including in this column. However, a comparison of the resumes of the various candidates i races where GOP candidates lost: Masters versus Kelly, Laxalt v. Cortez-Masto, Lake v. Hobbs, or Kent v. Perez, quickly reveals that it is impossible to say the GOP candidates were low quality as compared to their Democrat opponents. What is undeniably clear is that the GOP candidates were offering a clear choice in terms of policy and philosophy as compared to their Democrat rivals. On that metric, we can see that in places where Republicans lost, Democrat voters voted for more big government, more government spending, open borders, higher taxes, and radical abortion policies. It is hard to advocate for GOP candidates taking those positions even if it would make them “superior” to their opponents. At some point, the GOP must stand for something different than the socialism advocated by the Democrats. To quote a famous American: “A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong does not become right, and evil doesn’t become good, just because it’s accepted by a majority.” – Booker T. Washington
Republicans like McConnell and Romney do not believe that statement from Booker T. Washington. They are masters of expedience and the compromise. They will abandon any principle and deal with any devil to maintain and increase their own power. For decades now, the GOP leadership have followed that path and then Donald Trump came along and threw a stink bomb into that cozy power-mongering enclave. They hate him for that, and they want their cozy, corrupt and profitable scam to continue undisturbed. The way to make that happen, they think, is to eliminate Trump as a viable political leader. Ergo, their unceasing war against him in support of the Democrat party continues unabated. That also explains their refusal to set and clear GOP agenda in terms of policy. What does the GOP stand for? What policies is in trying to implement for the long term? Everyone knows what Trump wants, and most Republicans, as well as most libertarians and conservatives, want the same things Trump does; smaller Federal government and less regulation, secure borders, energy independence, no more foreign wars, an America first economic and foreign policy, law and order in their communities, and courts that uphold the Constitution. True Republicans, libertarians, and Constitutional conservatives will never embrace those philosophies, nor should they. Socialism is a failed system from the past, espoused by people who worship at the altar of government power.
Despite media spin, the disappointing showing by GOP candidates is not due to a lack of quality GOP candidates, it is plainly a combination of dishonest media, and an electorate in some places that wants more government control, more illegal immigration, more abortions, more spending, and more violation of Americans’ Constitutional rights. That is a race to the bottom that no Republican should enter. Instead, GOP candidates and their party need to fearlessly champion governors like Ron DeSantis, Kristi Noem, Kim Reynolds, and Greg Abbott who embrace the populist platform championed by Trump and demonized by RINOs like Romney and McConnell. The GOP may not win every race is defense of those values and policies, but abandoning those positions is a recipe for disaster for the GOP. More and more Americans are seeing that the Democrat path is a disaster for this country, but there will always be some people who will vote for disaster. See Venezuela for a great example of just how far people will go in voting for their own ruin. Our Constitution, and a judiciary dedicated to upholding it, is our last protection from that fate. That is why Trump’s court appointments were so important and have proven to be incredibly effective at holding socialism and anti-Constitution Democrats at bay. Surrendering now and going back to the RINO GOP of the Bush Family and Lindsey Graham is a road to failure for the Republican party and America too. The road to success is the one championed by Trump and proven by Republican governors who embraced the same policies and values. The fight will be long and hard but surrender to Democrat socialism is unthinkable. That is a path to ruin, authoritarianism, and the death of the American Republic.

Bravo! Couldn’t have said it any better.
Our war within should be based on ridding the Party of all those traitors to conservatism, All they want is their own hides to remain in power, and at our expense. Winning is not part of the equation, in their minds.
I like it that Trump makes them uncomfortable. when you get comfortable, you are only interested in your own comfort, not the people who elected you.
When someone says they don’t like Trump because of his personality or his accent, or something along those lines, they think they are being intelligent, when the simple thing to visualize is what he accomplished. In other words, actions. Those who still trash Trump, are very shallow. Find someone better, and vote him to the candidacy. Until then, pause and reflect, because it takes a lot of character and conviction to wallow through the swamp and not get bitten by one of those crocs, and Trump has proven himself to be extremely capable and ready.
We just have a lot of work to do, to get rid of all the fraudulent election habits of the last two years, and make no more excuses.
I agree with you and it’s really frustrating to me that so many so-called Republicans and conservatives refused to vote for Trump because they don’t like his personality. It’s like they’ve gotten back to high school when it comes to politics. Unfortunately, Trump has lately started regressing too. That whole $99 Trump coin gambit is just ridiculous, in my opinion. He started to act like a typical moneygrubbing politician.
