The Price of Identity Politics

The Price of Identity Politics

“A nation’s greatness is measured not just by its gross national product or military power, but by the strength of its devotion to the principles and values that bind its people and define their character.”

~ Ronald Reagan

Greetings my fellow Americans!

After nearly a century of defining ourselves based on the multitude of “underprivileged” groups and subgroups which have come to rely on the government to “level the playing field” or otherwise facilitate some form of reparations, we have wrought the side-effect (intentionally or otherwise) of a society and culture of people who inhabit the same land mass which has separated itself into factions which share virtually nothing in terms of worldview between each other. Whether the chicken of government intervention or the egg of the fracturing of the masses into cultural islands came first matters little at this point; what is clear is that the United States is no longer the “melting pot” of individuals willing to relegate the habits, practices and traditions of their “native lands” to a secondary role in favor of adopting a primary shared American worldview.

And this is not just happening among immigrants, although the case could be made that our national government has been quite lax in ensuring that some level of enculturation and corresponding demonstration of true allegiance to the founding principles of the U.S.A. has been exhibited by those wanting to enjoy the socio-political and -economic benefits of being counted among the ranks of “American.” Sadly, much of the same assessment of laxity could be assigned to our schools, churches and even homes, in all of which some burden of responsibility for ensuring that our indigenous children are being properly taught the virtues of being American, and what has made us the best place on Earth to be for so long.

In the absence of such enculturation and instillment of so-called national pride, those in government have made an industry of hand-selecting groups of winners and losers among us, based on narratives of unfairness, discrimination, or some other such human vice (which, by the way, pervades, and has pervaded, the whole of humanity throughout history) of which the United States is singled out as the most egregious perpetrator. Those who the government decides have been slighted, abused, or otherwise been handed a deck of cards chronically stacked against them stand to enjoy a windfall of new “rights” and privileges to right the wrongs which society has done to them just because of who they are (or, more appropriately, how they look).

For most of this time it has been those of northern and central African descent, as the wound of slavery and Civil War has never quite been allowed to heal by those who have industrialized racism; in more recent years this was expanded to all “people of color.” As it was discovered that simply spinning a narrative of injustice against a group for which American blame could be assigned, and guilt fomented, this industrialization was gradually extended to sexism and the cultural suppression of females, and, now, to genderism, as those who can claim, or are otherwise being made to feel that they don’t belong in the bodies in which they were born.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has also become a cash cow for those “consultants” who bring PhDs or some other level of claimed expertise in how to get us all to peacefully coexist. Of course, the one group with virtually no representation in this cultural paradigm are so-called white males, who have been deemed to have been the one group of similarly-looking humans who unfairly benefitted from the mistreatment of all of the aforementioned groups.

As long as our governments are continued to be allowed to designate special treatment for some over others based on how they look, and those who claim to specialize in advocating for those who have been wronged receive the corresponding public funding to “end” the injustice (and while never actually doing so), we will continue to fracture, as more and more socio-political groups are identified as needing to be “helped” by a government that claims that eventual and complete eradication of all forms of “bad” human behavior is the end goal. Meanwhile, we will be subjected to the white male Dylan Mulvaneys, et. al., of the world who learn that they can make a financial killing by successfully transforming themselves into one of the so-called underprivileged, while turning the knife stuck in the side of the very nation which has enabled them and their ancestors to enjoy the freedom of expression they now exploit.

  1. Sadly, you are correct. My grandfather emigrated to the USA after the turn of the last century. He was as American as Apple Pie and Chevrolet. A Brooklyn Dodgers fan, NY Mets fan and hard working man for his entire life. He loved this country. He’s probably rolling in his grave right now. We have become the things he came here to escape.

  2. The concept of united we stand, divided we fall is as old as nature itself, so it’s no surprise it’s still being used against us today. To defeat it, we must stand together as one and relentlessly mock the dividers, as it is abundantly clearly they have nothing approaching reason.
