Political Parody As a Weapon Part LXXXIII; The problem with folk music is with some of the folks that sing it.
Last week, in Part LXXXII, we took a look at the warped notion of our criminal justice system put forth by a former Speaker of the House of Representatives from San Francisco. Since then, in San Francisco, tech executive and the founder of Cash APP Bill Lee was stabbed to death and a former commissioner was beaten by a homeless man when he asked that a group to not camp near his mother’s house, demonstrating that while the City by the Bay may have a reputation for high tech, they are quite capable of achieving death and destruction there without even needing to access the mid-20th century technology of Stoner, Sullivan and Kalashnikov. This week’s song parody will look at this kind of violence that the left is ignoring for the moment.
The Washington Examiner last week, in response to events in Nashville, Tennessee, brought some numbers to the forefront while positing “Democrats have capitalized on the horrific domestic terrorist attack at the Covenant School in Nashville by using it as an example of the need for gun control. Exploiting the deaths of six people, including three 9-year-old students, the virulent Left have increased their propaganda to call for bans on ‘assault rifles’.” Author Christopher Tremoglie focuses on FBI crime statistics that reveal that hammers are used in more significantly more homicides each year than any rifles, of which the semi-automatic rifles fed with detachable magazines that the media labels “assault rifles” is a smaller portion of that overall long arm category.
The article makes the following points: “Consider the FBI’s data on homicides in the country. From 2015-2019, according to FBI homicide statistics, an average of 315 people were killed annually by rifles. Some subset of those might be considered assault weapons. In comparison, hammers — a tool traditionally used for home improvement — were used in an average of 446 homicides per year. “ and goes on to state “Furthermore, consider the average number of homicides resulting from knives or even people’s bare hands. During that same period, the FBI reported that an average of 669.2 people are killed annually from someone’s ‘hands, fists, feet, etc.’ Knives were used in substantially more homicides, with an average of 1,544 people killed yearly.”
These figures bear up beyond the years Mr. Tremoglie used for his research. FBI statistics from 2011 show similar disparities (496 to 332 Hammer to Rifle ratio). A simple Google search (hat tip to investigative journalist and researcher Don Lemon) of news reports prior to the period studied as well as since then shows a bevy of hammer homicides in blue states as well as red states, featuring perpetrators who are white, black, asian, gay, and straight; and victims who are children and transgender as well as adults. Many of the crimes highlighted also feature more than one victim hammered to death by the alleged killers.
The danger that rears its ugly head when facts such as these are presented, though, is not that leftist advocates of semiautomatic rifle bans will logically analyze the data and realize that their proposals will fail to result in fewer murders, and at best will merely require the homicidally inclined to select less technologically advanced weapons in favor of the weapons used in the years prior to the end of the Second World War. Rather, the impulse of the leftists who want to control all of their fellow citizens in order to “protect” them would likely be to try to ban hammers, knives and raising a hand or foot in self defense.
In Part LXXVI, the song catalogue of left wing folk singers Peter, Paul & Mary was accessed in order to mock an afore-mentioned demoted CNN morning host. I have borrowed another of their hits (also covered by Trini Lopez) that these early social justice warriors used to signal their virtue entitled “If I Had a Hammer”, in order to parody the impulses of the left to censor, ban and control (hopefully before another deranged Trump-hater grabs a rifle and tries to skew the statistics by slaughtering more innocent victims).
If I had a hammer
The left would try to ban it
And that’s how they would plan it
All over this land
A hammer brings danger
And can harm without warning
No more hammers in our hands say
The leftists as our masters
All over this land
If I had feet and hands
The left has to control them
Register and enroll them,
All over this land
A man’s feet can endanger
Give all hands this warning
You’d better just applaud the efforts of
The leftists as our masters
All over this land
If I wrote a song
That had in it a warning
They’d ban it in the evening
All over this world
Ideas endanger
So they give a trigger warning
If they tell the truth about
The leftists as our masters
All over this land
They took away the hammer
And tried to tie our hands
And censored any song we’d sing
All over this land
They call it social justice
When they take away freedom
And that’s how it’s always been
As the leftists as our masters
Take over this land
Take over this land
Take over this land
Take over this land
Take over this land
Take over this land
Take over this land

“…founder of Cash APP Bill Lee was stabbed …” should have been Bob Lee.
