Decades ago, Nobel prize-winning economist Milton Friedman issued a warning. He said, “It’s just obvious you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state.” He reasoned that “the supply of immigrants will become infinite.”
His admonition rings even truer today than it did 30 years ago.
Last Wednesday, it was reported that more than 10,000 migrants had crossed our southwestern border in a single day. Asked for a comment, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) told a Fox News reporter, “What you see is different than what’s happening in actuality.”
In a Friday night news dump, we learned that “what’s happening in actuality” is infinitely worse. Noticeably absent from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release was the total number of migrant encounters in August: 304,162. That’s yet another record.
Also conspicuously missing from the report was any historical data. With one month left to go in fiscal year 2023, the number of migrant encounters this year stands at 2,860,127, already eclipsing the prior year’s total of 2,766,582. The figures for fiscal years 2021 and 2020 are 1,956,519 and 646,822, respectively.
Long before the statement provides even the link to this data, readers are assured that “CBP remains vigilant and expects to see fluctuations in migration, knowing that smugglers continue to mislead and exploit vulnerable individuals.”
One explanation for the higher numbers is that encounters along our northern border have picked up at a fairly robust pace over the past year. Another reason is a little known “parole” program introduced last year by the Department of Homeland Security and implemented in January: the CBP One mobile application.
Included in this year’s tally are 221,456 “noncitizens” from Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba, and Haiti who have bypassed the border altogether and flown directly into one of 43 designated U.S. airports by scheduling appointments on the CBP app. This data was obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request filed by Todd Bensman, a senior fellow at the Washington, D.C.-based Center for immigration Studies.
Who knows what took him so long, but last Wednesday, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott officially declared the border crisis to be “an invasion” by the Mexican cartels. He attached a November 2022 letter he had written to President Joe Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that highlights the effects of the administration’s failure to enforce U.S. immigration laws. .
Abbott wrote, “The federal government’s failure has forced me to invoke Article I, § 10, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, thereby enabling the State of Texas to protect its own territory against invasion by the Mexican drug cartels.
“Ranches are being ripped apart, and homes are vulnerable to intrusion. Our border communities are regularly disrupted by human traffickers and bailouts. Deadly fentanyl is crossing the porous border to such a degree that it is now the leading cause of death for citizens between the ages of 18 and 45.”
Abbott wasn’t exaggerating. The Biden administration has ceded control over our southwest border to the Mexican cartels, which have become billion-dollar enterprises over the past few years.
Several weeks ago, Bensman spoke to a border patrol agent in Fronton, Texas, who told him the cartels have prepared the migrants well for encounters with U.S. immigration authorities. Their paperwork is in order. They have newly printed birth certificates. He said, “These guys know everything that we do. … They know what to say when it comes to asylum.” When asked why they are claiming asylum, “a thousand of them will say someone wants to kill me,” he added.
In addition to the grave implications for U.S. national security, the border crisis is putting an enormous strain on our economy. According to the agent, migrant families, which are considered to be one parent and one child, receive $2,200 per month from the U.S. government for cost of living expenses. And some families “double-dip.” The agent explained that a family of four can claim they are two families and thus receive $4,400. Considering the average Social Security recipient receives $1,900 per month, this truly is putting Americans last.
You can’t fault migrants for wanting a better life. But unlike the millions of immigrants who have flocked to our shores throughout our nation’s history in search of opportunity, modern-day migrants expect to be taken care of. And those expectations aren’t misplaced.
In most cases, all they have to do is set foot on American soil and, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer, they are immediately supplied with food, shelter, healthcare, and even education. They automatically become economic drains on the state.
Discussing the border crisis in 2019, former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said that under the Obama administration, 1,000 migrant apprehensions in a single day was considered a crisis. Ten thousand in a single day is a catastrophe. It’s unsustainable and it is killing America.
