Unveiling the Pandemic: Leaders’ Closet Tyrannies and Constitutional Balance

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan, like numerous other states, implemented travel advisories and quarantine recommendations for individuals entering the state from areas with elevated COVID-19 transmission rates. Primarily Florida since many people “snow bird.” They enjoy Michigan summers and Florida Winters.

These advisories were allegedly based on public health metrics and aimed to curb the spread of the virus. The decision was not specifically targeted at residents of Florida but rather driven by concerns surrounding the potential importation of COVID-19 cases from regions experiencing surges in infections.

Fear of exacerbating local outbreaks and overwhelming healthcare systems fueled these measures, leading to recommendations for travelers, including those from Florida, to follow quarantine protocols or undergo testing upon entry into Michigan. The aim was to safeguard public health and mitigate the risk of further transmission within the state.

These actions violated the US Constitution, specifically the Privileges and Immunities Clause, found in Article IV, Section 2 of the Constitution, prohibits states from discriminating against out-of-state residents regarding fundamental rights and privileges.

Let us not overlook the rapid transformation of some of our “leaders” during times of fear and uncertainty, revealing tendencies that echoed more of “closet tyrants” than guardians of the Constitution they swore an Oath to defend.

When fear gripped our communities during the pandemic, some authorities resorted to overreach, overlooking individual liberties in their quest for control. It’s crucial those in charge remain vigilant, ensuring that in moments of crisis, our leaders remain true to the core principles of our Constitution, respecting civil liberties while addressing public health concerns. As we move forward, let this be a reminder of the delicate balance between tyranny and preserving the fundamental rights upon which our nation stands. America got a failing grade in our collective response to the virus.
