It’s a harsh sentiment to express, but some argue that USA Today mirrors characteristics reminiscent of a modern-day Babylon. In this critical examination, we will explore and draw parallels between the United States, often celebrated for its wealth and power, and the ancient city known for its pride, arrogance, lack of morals, and eventual societal decay. While the comparison may be uncomfortable, it prompts us to reflect on aspects of our society that warrant attention and improvement.
Babylon was historically known for its pride and arrogance, and some argue that the United States exhibits similar traits on the global stage. A critical examination of our foreign policy, international relations, and domestic politics prompts us to question whether our actions are driven by a genuine desire for global harmony or fueled by a sense of superiority and profit. We have been putting warheads on foreheads since 2001 and we don’t show any intentions of slowing down.
While societal values evolve over time, concerns about a perceived decline in morals persist. From political controversies to ethical dilemmas, the landscape of modern America raises questions about whether we are upholding moral standards or sacrificing them in the pursuit of individual or collective selfish interests. Examining the moral fabric of our society prompts a critical evaluation of our actions and their consequences.
Babylon’s eventual downfall is often attributed to societal decay, and some argue that the United States faces similar challenges. From issues like social division (CRT), PRIDE Month, to the erosion of trust in institutions (military and medicine), examining aspects of decay prompts us to reflect on how we can cease the current trajectory, and rebuild the foundations of our society and ensure its longevity.
While the comparison of USA Today to a modern-day Babylon is provocative, it serves as a critical lens through which we can examine our society’s strengths and shortcomings. Acknowledging parallels in gluttonous wealth, pride, arrogance, moral considerations, and societal decay challenges us to strive for some level of improvement. Instead of succumbing to a fatalistic view, this critique invites us to engage in shaping a future that addresses concerns and builds a more just, unified, and resilient society for our children and their posterity.
