The Broken American College System: A Call for Competency instead of Social Justice

The American college system is in crisis, and the signs of distress are evident. As a parent of a high school senior, I am witnessing firsthand the panic mode that colleges are in as they struggle to attract enough applicants. This is a far cry from the situation I faced 30 years ago when the requirements for top schools were rigorous and demanding. Today, colleges are grappling with plummeting application numbers, primarily due to exorbitant prices, the rise of diploma mills, and diminishing returns on investment for college graduates in the eyes of employers.

As an engineer who has worked in the industry for years, I have seen the consequences of this broken system firsthand. Recently, I had a summer intern who was a senior engineering student at the University of Toledo. To my astonishment, this individual lacked even the most basic skills required for the job. He was incapable of operating a screwdriver and had no concept of CAD drawing, essential tools in the field of mechanical engineering. Despite his academic background, he demonstrated a glaring lack of practical knowledge and critical thinking abilities.

The case of this incompetent intern highlights the failures of the modern college system. Instead of producing well-rounded graduates equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the workforce, colleges have become diploma mills, churning out students ill-prepared for the realities of their chosen professions. Employers are increasingly disillusioned with the caliber of college graduates, questioning the value of a degree in today’s job market.

In conclusion, the urgency of reforming the American college system cannot be overstated. It is imperative that colleges shift their focus away from producing woke social justice warriors and instead prioritize the cultivation of competent engineers and professionals ready to tackle the challenges of the modern workforce. By realigning their educational priorities and emphasizing practical skills development, colleges can ensure that graduates are equipped with the expertise and capabilities needed to excel in their chosen fields. Let us advocate for a college system that prioritizes excellence, innovation, and tangible contributions to society, rather than ideological agendas. Only then can we truly fulfill the promise of higher education and prepare the next generation of leaders to drive prosperity forward
