Perhaps there is no single group in this country is more prone to ignore US history than the Democratic party. They love to try and ignore the fact that the Democratic party that started the Civil War and is the party of Jim Crow. Today, they ignore the criminal actions of the Presidents from their own party. We see this in their self-righteous anger at the Supreme Court decision to hear Trumps appeal on presidential immunity.
Presidential immunity is the idea (stemming from the medieval concept of sovereign immunity) that actions taken by the President acting as President that would be illegal were a private citizen to do it are not criminal if the President does the action or orders it done. On the face of it, this idea may seem unreasonable. But there are valid reasons for it. Just the actions of defending the country could arguably involve ordering murder, for example.
Of course, the Democrats have a long history of not caring about the law. Or even basic morality. After all, they reelected the serial rapist and (vehicular) homicidal Edward Kennedy multiple times. And elected a known rapist, Bill Clinton, to the presidency. But now they are all bent out of shape because Trump is claiming the protections of presidential immunity for his actions around January 6. Now just to be clear, Trump could definitely have done more to stop the rioting on Jan 6, but even a cursory review of his actions makes it clear that they don’t rise to even the so much as inciting a riot, let alone the other charges that have been filed.
But despite what the Democrats say, the question of Presidential immunity in this case is very important and must have its day in court. If President Trump is wrong in his claim of presidential immunity, here are just a few criminal charges that could easily filed against former and the current presidents if presidential immunity is determined not to exist:
- Biden – Treason (providing aid to the Taliban by leaving arms and vehicles in Afghanistan). Accessory to every crime from petty theft to felony murder for allowing illegal aliens into the US.
- Obama – First degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder by having a US citizen killed by drones in a neutral foreign country. And killing the citizens son accidently. Gun smuggling. Contempt of congress.
- Bush – first degree murder for ordering US citizens to be killed by Drones.
- Clinton – perjury, rape.
I have no doubt there are many more actions that would be criminally chargeable, these are just the items that come from my 60 year old memory.
The Supreme Court could rule many ways, the most likely result I see is a 9-0 decision that presidential immunity is indeed valid, along with a long list of crimes that could plausibly be charged against current and former presidents. Should the court rule otherwise, the results are likely to cause chaos in our legal system.
The democrats expect the court to rule that Trump has presidential immunity by 6-3, then use that ruling to claim the court is illegitimate. I wonder what they would say if the court agreed with the Democrats, then the state of Georgia filed felony accessory to murder charges against Biden?
The founding fathers in their wisdom made impeachment the sole method of punishing a rogue president. They realized that the President may need to take actions in his official capacity that would be illegal to private citizens. The Democrats keep claiming that if Presidential immunity is a thing, then the president could order his political rivals killed.
I invariably respond, President Obama already did that. Sadly, the Democrats have caused the hyper-partisanship in our country to reach the point that no matter what action the President takes, his party will not vote for his conviction in an impeachment.
