Dueling Banjos and Dueling Generals

Remember “Dueling Banjos” from the movie “Deliverance”?  The Harris Campaign came out with the list of over 700 hundred defense and national security specialists supporting a promotion from the Supreme Chef of Word Salad to Commander-in-Chief of the most lethal force in human history.  Isn’t that special?  If Trump produces a like list, as it happens during most political seasons, we’ll have “Dueling Generals.”    

One of the banjo players in the movie is supposed to be an inbred, mentally-challenged – retarded – banjo virtuoso.  When political campaigns sign up dueling flag officers – generals in my Army shorthand – the same comparison can be made.  One side is relative normie.  The other, borrowing from the movie “Tropic Thunder” has gone “full retard.”  And, never go “full retard”, remember from the movie.

I know 6 names on the list I saw.  One was only in passing in grad school #1.  Not surprised if he went full Libtard. 

I consider the five Generals and Assistant Secretary (Flag officer rank) friends. Two, who are West Point classmates, I truly philos as my brother classmates. 

I have the greatest respect for both of them as Infantrymen and for their service in Iraq and Afghanistan as Generals.  I’d never disrespect them or cast aspersions on them in any regard. I’ve known them since we were boys becoming men. 

Frankly, I can see why they could be “Never Trump.”  The case can be made against him as an unthoughtful, unserious, unschooled person.  Got it.  His underlings brought him the successes he had overseas.  Those successes are substantial.

Consequently, I can’t see how my classmates would go whole hog for Harris.  Maybe they see Russia as an existential threat to the U.S.  I don’t, unless we provoke them to nuke us.  Russia is being Russia. (https://jatticus.wordpress.com/2014/03/19/russia-being-russia/).

The same rationale applies to my former colleague teaching at West Point.  He was a Reagan Republican who may see Trump as a loose cannon. 

I served in the same brigade as two of the retired generals.  Actually, spent 5 years working closely with one of them. 

One guy thinks Democrat welfare saved his family from starvation when he was growing up.  I admire his loyalty even though I see other paths through poverty.  Like the hard way my family trod up. 

The last general officer guy was always more of a statist and government guy, so it’s an easy step over the line to cheer the vapid Queen of Central Planning nonsense.  He was not an Econ “P.”

I’d be pleased to see any of the five guys I know on that list.  I respect them and care for their well-being.  Not so sure that they hold my political views with equal respect.  And, I’d shrug off any criticism or disdain.  My friendship and loyalty isn’t transactional.

I know what I believe and why.   

I can defend every word I write and speak.  Even those in jest.

I’m confident that 3 of the 5 have walked away or never held a  Bible-believing faith.  That makes it much easier to support the Human Secularist Totalitarians who amusingly call themselves Democrats these days.

Now allow me one cheap shot.  The recent round of public appearances by West Point, 4-Star, snake-eater McChrystal is a testimony to how a narrow skill set can advance one to great heights.  And, how their folly can tumble them right down.

If the Rolling Stone article that took him out was 10% ground truth, that 4-Star wasn’t Bradley, Ike, MacArthur, Abrams, Schwartzkopf, Petraeus, etc. material. Admitting his vote for Obama in 08 was the cherry on top of three scoops of clueless.

I don’t know this guy.  Don’t think it’s a loss.

Note to retired Flag Officers:  Don’t be the retard in dueling generals.
