Rome- and the Coming End of the Global American Empire

In Germany, along the quietly flowing Altmühl River, is the medieval town of Weissenburg. It is an old city, once a Roman fort and trading center known as Biricianis. Weissenburg was on the border of the Roman Empire with so-called barbarians of Germania to the north. Ultimately, the Germanic tribes destroyed the fort in the 4th century AD, and took over the town.

In 2005, I was doing field research on Germanic fortifications and castles, and while dining in a small Gaststätte, some locals told me that I should go to Weissenburg to see the Roman therme, or bath discovered there. Though a deviation from my research goals, I accepted. And what I learned was fascinating.

The Roman bath had vanished to history, buried beneath eight to ten feet of farmland, only to be discovered in 1977 when the town planned to build an apartment complex. As a structure, the bath was quite advanced, with heat pushed by a set of bellows to warm both the water and floors. As such an advanced system, one would think that the “barbarians” who captured the site would have preserved it. But they didn’t, and the question remains… why not?

By AD 400, the Roman Empire had sunk into the most degraded behaviors imaginable. The writings of Roman historian Suetonius are often cited by modern historians, including a few I know personally, as being loaded with salacious lies and gossip. Yet, considering our own debauchery today, I now urge these historians to apologize to the memory of Suetonius.

Salvian, a Christian presbyter from Gaul, related the debauched behavior that occurred in the 5th century. In distress, he wrote, “who could believe or even hear that men converted to feminine bearing not only in their habits and nature, but even their looks, walk, dress, and everything that is proper to the sex or appearance of a man? Therefore, everything was put contrariwise.” He concluded his thoughts by noting that “nothing seemed worse to certain men than to have something masculine about them.”[1]

Does this sound familiar?

I suspect that the Germanic tribes in the area, having been converted to Christianity, were so incensed by the pagan behavior of Romans that they not only refused to maintain the bath, but even purposely buried it and planted crops over it to excise its memory. The concept of destroying a conquered culture’s physical sites is quite common in history. Even today, we see this process of “cultural cleansing” in an effort to eradicate parts of America’s history.

Salvian noted that these things were done openly in a Christian city, where the Apostles had taught and Christians had been martyred. Yet nobody in authority stopped them.

The Roman Empire continued to decline and eventually was eradicated. Such decline is the fate of all empires that descend into debauchery, with a shredded social fabric exacerbated by bloated government spending and crippling taxes.

Even if Donald Trump wins in November, the days of the Global American Empire are numbered. If history alone is a guide… not to mention Biblical moral law…, the U.S. has only a short time to live.

While the United States is doomed, men… and women… of vision need to look to the future. What will replace this once great nation? How will it be structured? How will people raise children, run businesses, create jobs and pay for things? What will we tolerate, and more importantly, what will we not tolerate?

We must start to think of the unthinkable: What will come when the great Global American Empire falls? This is when our victory will be manifest.

For this reason, I urge people to “think locally, and act locally.”
