The Democratic hold on minority voters is starting to crack. They know they need to keep them on the plantation, or the party loses.
“I don’t know how Nixon won. I don’t know anyone who voted for him”.
Attributed to New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael in 1972
The last week has brought up some shocking discoveries for liberals, and it’s breaking their progressive templates. In their way of “thinking,” minorities must always vote for Democrats. Or least not vote for Republicans. While not as openly racist as Lyndon Johnson’s comments after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, “I’ll have those ni%%ers voting Democrat for two-hundred years,” the difference is in degree, not kind.
First, to the king of condescension and arrogance, Barrack Obama. When asked about Black males not supporting the selected not elected one, Kamala Harris, he was seriously put off. From Politico (emphasis mine):
Barack Obama is urging Black men to step up their support for Kamala Harris, a sign that her campaign is worried about what is typically a reliable demographic for Democrats.
Referencing reports that support for Harris is lagging among Black males, the former president gave what amounted to a scolding as he made an unscheduled stop at a campaign field office in Pittsburgh.
“You’re coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses, I’ve got a problem with that,” he said. “Because part of it makes me think— and I’m speaking to men directly— part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that.”
Well Barry, hate to inform you, but men have a problem with this woman and what she plans to do. Banning fracking, continuing the invasion at the southern border, keeping fuel and food prices high. By the way you don’t carry much influence anymore outside the Beltway. No question you are still a king maker in the Democratic party, but not to Americans in general. You show some gall when you lecture people on greed from one of your three mansions.
To add to this condescension, the Harris-Watz campaign released a video of males saying they are “man-enough” (try not to spit your drink on that) to vote for Kamala Harris for president. I really love the fat dude who says, “I eat carburetors for breakfast.” Probably a few many other things. I doubt Ms. Harris has ever heard of a carburetor, Mr. Watz is too stupid to work on one, and Mr. Biden doesn’t recall what one did. Again, watch at your own peril.
Then I found this piece from the New York Times over the weekend interesting. The author, Nate Cohn, is shocked Black and Hispanic men are supporting Trump so strongly. Not a majority of either group, but enough to break the death grip Democrats have enjoyed on Black and Latin voters for decades. In other words, enough of a difference to make the difference.
Five possible explanations for the increases in support, particularly among young men.
Trump might well return to the White House by faring better among Black and Hispanic voters combined than any Republican presidential nominee since the enactment of the Civil Rights Act in 1964…
…the polls find Mr. Trump faring unusually well for a Republican among Black and Hispanic voters. Overall, Kamala Harris is ahead, 78 percent to 15 percent, among Black voters, and she’s leading, 56-37, among Hispanic voters.
Almost any way we can measure it, Mr. Trump is running as well or better among Black and Hispanic voters as any Republican in recent memory. In 2020, Joe Biden’s Black support was 92 percent among major-party voters; his Hispanic support was 63 percent, according to Times estimates.
How is this possible Nate? Perhaps they are asking the question Ms. Harris dodged during the debate, “Am I better off now than four years ago?” They can’t avoid the answer, “No.” And looking at four to eight more years of what we just went through is not an appealing thought.
Not that facts will get in the way of a good story. Mr. Cohn thinks the answer is, wait for it…racism. From the article:
1. They don’t mind the dog whistles
To liberals, Mr. Trump’s views on race, crime and immigration are little more than racist dog whistles. But many Black and Hispanic voters hear this and like what they’re hearing.
Around 40 percent of Black voters and 43 percent of Hispanic voters say they support building a Southern border wall. Similarly, 45 percent of Hispanic voters and 41 percent of Black voters support deporting undocumented immigrants.
Half of Hispanic voters and nearly half — 47 percent — of Black voters (and 50% of White voters) say that crime in big cities is a major problem that’s gotten out of control…
…In summary, a lot of Mr. Trump’s core populist, conservative message resonates with a sizable chunk of Black and Hispanic voters.
It’s not a dog whistle Mr. Cohn, it’s a fact. By the way, what is the problem with the wall on the border? If you are an immigrant, you will enter through a point of entry and have a visa and green card. The issue is with the invasion on our southern border.
Illegal aliens (they are not undocumented immigrants) are invading this country, increasing crime and draining our resources (you know about the billion plus the Department of Homeland Security blew on these people). And Latin Americans and Blacks have to deal with these people a lot more than you do. Perhaps you heard of Venezuelan gangs taking over an apartment complex in Aurora CO. Or two illegal aliens from Venezuelan kidnapping, raping, and murdering a twelve-year-old girl in Houston? That is what people all across this county, especially in large cities are dealing with every day.
2. They’re not offended; they might even be entertained
Mr. Trump has offended millions of Black and Hispanic voters…
But a sizable minority of Black and Hispanic voters aren’t necessarily offended. Overall, 20 percent of Black voters say those offended by Mr. Trump take him too seriously. Similarly, 40 percent of Hispanic voters say people offended by Mr. Trump take his words too seriously, and only about one-third of Hispanic voters say Mr. Trump is talking about them when he’s talking about problems with immigration…
No kidding Mr. Cohn. If you’re a voter, you likely came in legally and became a citizen. If you’re not a voter, you are more likely an illegal alien, and as you can see, illegal aliens are a major concern in Hispanic and Black areas.
3. It’s the economy, stupid
…Many people assume that Democrats win minority voters simply because of racial issues, but the role of economic self-interest should not be underestimated…
…Just 20 percent of Hispanic voters and 26 percent of Black voters say the current economic conditions are good or excellent. More than half of both groups say they have “often” cut back on groceries over the last year because of the cost…
…Overall, the economy was the most-cited issue among Black and Hispanic voters when asked what would most decide their vote this November…
…Mr. Trump is running again when voters are more dissatisfied with the economy, and when many look back on Mr. Trump’s presidency as a prosperous and peaceful time. Ms. Harris has a mere 69-25 lead among Black voters who rate the economy as the most important factor for their vote; Mr. Trump leads, 61-35, among Hispanic voters who say the economy matters most…
James Carville said it best with that phrase. Or as countless politicians said before, “Peace and Prosperity.” The Biden-Harris administration has provided neither. Inflation, persistently high prices for food and fuel, painfully high interest rates making the American Dream of home ownership just that, a dream. It’s interesting to see how Ms. Harris says, “On day one I’ll fix everything,” when Democratics have not fixed it the last four years.
4. The end of hope and change
Even beyond the poor state of the economy, there’s something deeper holding Democrats back: a sense that voting for them just won’t make much of a difference.
Of all the questions in the survey, perhaps the single worst one for Democrats was on the question of which party best “keeps its promises.” Just 63 percent of Black voters and 46 percent of Hispanic voters said “keeps its promises” describes the Democratic Party better than the Republicans…
Remember, “If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor. If you like your plan, you can keep your plan.” Or “We can’t drill our way to cheap gasoline.” People on the lower socio-economic latter are most effected by high prices, be it for fuel or food, which have skyrocketed since 2021. And seeing Ms. Harris lies through her teeth on wanting to eliminate fracking and limiting drilling, voters can see more painful economic times under Harris-Watz.
Trump, for his many shortcomings, went into office saying he would repeal Obamacare, secure the border, bring back manufacturing jobs, and lower taxes. He did or at least tried to do all of these. A politician who keeps his promises, how refreshing.
5. For a new generation, Trump is ‘normal’
The Times/Siena polls suggest Mr. Trump has made his largest gains among young Black and Hispanic men…
Overall, he has a 55-38 lead among Hispanic men 45 or younger. Ms. Harris leads among Black men under 45, but only by 69-27. The results among 18-to-29-year-old Hispanic and Black men are even more striking…
Again, enough of a difference to make the difference. Black voters traditionally voted 90% plus for Democrat nominee for president. If you can break that to 75%/25%, the Democrats will lose, and they know that. Another point not mentioned, with the Biden and Harris known hostility to Israel, it may lower the 70% Jewish vote for Democrats. More reasons they need more illegal aliens legalized (i.e., amnesty) to ensure more minority voters relying on the Democratic overseer.
