As a young Cavalry Scout Platoon Leader I was fortunate enough to serve under a giant of a Squadron Commander who taught me that the enemy – like water flowing downhill – will always choose the path of least resistance. No foe attacks a fortified strongpoint when an open flank is available to exploit. This was the basis of GEN Schwarzkopf’s “Hail Mary” plan that ensured a rapid Allied victory in Desert Storm.
The path of least resistance was clearly in the warped mind of the murderer on Bourbon Street in the wee hours of New Year’s Day. New Years Eve in Times Square, NYC is the premiere target for terror attacks in the Western Hemisphere, but the NYPD prepares professionally and executes protection so well that it deters terrorists from attacking this prime target. So they look for easier, softer targets.
Allow me to introduce to you the architect of yesterday’s Path of Least Resistance – New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
A veteran of some of the worst PDs in the nation (Memphis, Chicago, Spokane, Oakland) the 66 year old Kirkpatrick is the poster child for failing upward in law enforcement. In 2020 she was fired by unanimous City Council vote as Chief of Oakland PD for making false official statements in the fallout of her supporting an ICE raid in her sanctuary city. Note: A jury later determined her termination was retaliatory in nature.

In 2023 the notoriously corrupt New Orleans PD figured they’d give Kirkpatrick a shot protecting their good citizens by making her Superintendent of the Department. One year later, while on duty, she struck two pedestrians in the French Quarter while driving her cruiser. Helluva first impression…
In a press conference yesterday Kirkpatrick touted the defensive measures the NOPD had in place on New Years Eve. She next claimed that the terrorist “defeated” her departments anti terror measures. What she failed to detail was that her “anti terror” measures consisted of no solid AT bollards in place, just a police cruiser parked in the middle of the street. All the terrorist needed to do to “defeat” this defensive measure was to drive around the cruiser- which he did. Like water flowing down a hill…the path of least resistance.
