Are we approaching a chaos event horizon – the point at which we’ll lack the moral foundation to self-govern? The evidence that the values essential for democracy are disappearing from our society is overwhelming.
A violent criminal thug tries to steal from a shop owner by passing counterfeit currency, and then dies of a drug overdose while being arrested. The community jailed the arresting officers, defunded the police department, and erected a monument to the thug.
Hamas raped and/or murdered over 1200 civilians as part of its “river to the sea” objective. It was even reported that they burned Jewish babies alive, as part of this initiative. After I wrote an article condemning the atrocities, I received emails from other Americans claiming that the slaughter of children needed to be “contextualized” against the suffering of the Palestinians.
An assassin kills a political rally attendee and wounds Donald Trump. In response, a Democrat congressional staffer laments: “Please get you some shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time.” Numerous other Democrats remained conspicuously quiet about the incident.
Another assassin successfully murders a healthcare insurance CEO, with a gunshot to his head. The left lauds the murderer as a hero, and California names a ballot measure in his honor.
Vandalism and assault – especially against one particular car manufacturer – are now celebrated by the left as “political expression.” Rather than condemn the destruction of property, Democrats are calling for more of it.
Hundreds of thousands of human lives are terminated every year. Over 60 percent of Americans consider the practice normal “reproductive health care.” A disturbingly small number of people grieve for the lives cut short. For those who do, praying for the souls of the lost outside an abortion clinic places them at risk of a prison sentence.
According to the Network Contagion Research Institute, 55 percent of those who lean left politically would consider the murder of President Trump to be “justified.” 48 percent also say the murder Elon Musk – who is donating his time to save us money – would be justified.
What do these examples have in common? They are all symptoms of an ailing society in which theft, persecution, and even murder is not considered wrong, but merely something which must be contextualized against the aggressor’s motives. They are signs that our society is losing its moral compass.
We started down the path of moral relativism at the urging of radicals. They insisted that notions of right and wrong needed to evolve with mankind. With the hubris that such a philosophy requires, we spent decades telling ourselves that we were the ultimate arbiters of good and evil – adjusting our boundaries of acceptable behavior as a convenience. Now we see where this “God doesn’t make the rules” road leads. Violence against the innocent – also known as terrorism – is rationalized as the “end justifies the means” by a disturbingly high percentage of Americans.
I have previously argued at this website that self-governance is not possible without common and widely held values. If we don’t overwhelmingly agree that others have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we will not self-regulate our behavior. Without voluntarily managing our own behavior, our country can only exist in one of two states: a state of chaos, or a police state. Freedom cannot exist in a society in which “freedom” is an accepted means to victimize others.
The radicals of the left seem determined to destroy all vestiges of civilized behavior – apparently presuming that the resulting chaos will pave the way for communism social justice. They‘re naïve in thinking that after they have “fundamentally transformed America,” the chaos will magically disappear and social order will return. That’s not how it works in a country which has lost its moral compass. Consider what happened in Bosnia when ethnic cleansing became an accepted political tactic.
Perhaps the radicals think they can restore order by force, when they’ve finished America’s transformation. They’re clearly not concerned about freedom. A police state would suit them just fine, as long as the police work for them. But they’ve forgotten that post George Floyd, they weakened the police with defunding and the criminalization law enforcement. The post Obama Democrats also weakened the military with DEI, squandering of resources, and poor leadership.
The radicals also fail to note another key difference between American and other countries which have tried the communist experiment. There are over 400 million firearms in the hands of over 125 million Americans – more than enough to defeat even our own army. Furthermore, Pew Research estimates that Republican gun owners outnumber Democrat gun owners by more than 2 to 1. If the left pushes the chaos past the tipping point, the conflict will be short and brutal, with a conclusion not to the liking of the snowflakes.
Given the growing acceptance of violence, a chaos event horizon – the point of no return at which we can no longer be a free – is approaching. We don’t know how far away that horizon is, but our growing moral depravity proves that we are marching towards it.
Conservatives are celebrating the accountability which President Trump is delivering. But no President can fix our underlying ailment. He may keep the chaos at bay for a few more years, but correcting our moral confusion is a duty we must all face. Otherwise, we will cross the horizon, and America will experience its own Sarajevo … on a grand scale.
