The Words of Jesus and the Image of God

Jesus’ teachings provide a powerful confirmation of the concept that being made in the **image of God** is not merely about traits like intelligence or morality, but about **function** and **purpose**. Throughout His ministry, Jesus emphasized the **kingdom of God** and humanity’s role within it. He continually pointed people back to their original calling—representing God and working with Him to **restore creation**. One of the clearest expressions of this can be found in the **Sermon on the Mount** (Matthew 5-7), where Jesus outlines the principles of a life that mirrors God’s kingdom.

For example, when Jesus calls His followers to be **“salt and light”** (Matthew 5:13-16), He is affirming their role as **representatives of God on Earth**. Salt preserves and light guides, symbolizing the influence God’s people are meant to have in a broken world. This echoes the idea that the image of God is about **function**—humans are called to bring order, justice, and goodness into a world marred by sin and chaos. Jesus is telling His disciples that their purpose is to **reflect God’s light** in everything they do, just as He did.

Another critical passage is found in **John 14:9**, where Jesus says, **“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”** Jesus, being fully human and fully divine, perfectly embodied the image of God in both His life and His actions. By reflecting the character and authority of God, Jesus showed what it means for humans to live out their purpose as **image-bearers**. He did this not just through miracles but also by healing, teaching, and serving—demonstrating that true **authority and dominion** (as given to humans in Genesis) is about **service, love, and self-sacrifice**, not power or domination.

Moreover, in **Luke 10:27**, when asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus responds, **“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.”** This reinforces the idea that our role as image-bearers is relational—we are to reflect God’s love to others, not simply by living moral lives, but by actively **participating in God’s work** of loving and restoring the world. Jesus’ teaching aligns with the understanding that being made in the image of God is about **how we live**, not just who we are.

In every word and action, Jesus affirmed that humanity’s role is to be **co-creators** and **co-rulers** with God, participating in His kingdom on Earth. His life provides the perfect model of what it means to truly **live in the image of God**—a life of **service, stewardship, and love**.
