If we’re going to ban harmful words, there’s one word that stands above all others in its capacity to divide, oppress, and mislead: the word “race.” Historically, this word has done little more than serve as a tool of division, a way to justify inequality and create hierarchies. Today, with our understanding of human biology, it’s clearer than ever that “race” is not just misleading, but entirely inaccurate. Scientists have confirmed that humans share 99.9% of the same DNA, meaning that, biologically speaking, we are nearly identical. The idea of separate “races” is nothing more than a relic of social manipulation.
The problem with the word “race” is that it falsely implies deep, fundamental differences between people that simply don’t exist. From a biological standpoint, there is only one race: the human race. Our differences—whether in skin color, facial features, or hair type—are the result of evolutionary adaptations to different environments, nothing more. Yet, for centuries, the word “race” has been used to justify everything from colonialism to slavery to modern-day racism. The word perpetuates a false narrative, suggesting that some humans are fundamentally different, even inferior, when the science tells us otherwise.
In reality, what we call “race” is simply a matter of nationality, geography, and culture. The use of the word “race” has allowed certain groups to exploit superficial differences as a means of control. When people categorize others based on “race,” they are not talking about biology, but rather about socially constructed ideas meant to maintain power dynamics. This dangerous illusion continues to cause harm, fostering racism, prejudice, and discrimination. It’s time we recognize that the word itself is a major part of the problem.
If we want to move towards a more equitable world, we must abandon outdated and harmful ideas like “race.” Words have power, and the word “race” has historically been used as a tool for control and division. By banning it, we send a powerful message: we are no longer willing to accept artificial divisions. Instead, we must focus on celebrating our shared humanity, while also respecting the rich cultural diversity that stems from our different national backgrounds. There is no “race,” only people—individuals with unique stories, talents, and experiences.
In the end, the word “race” is perhaps the most dangerous word in any language. It carries with it centuries of pain and division, rooted in ignorance and the desire for control. Today, science and common sense tell us that we are one species, one people, one human family. It’s time we discard the outdated, harmful language of race and embrace a future where we focus on unity, not division. There’s only one race: the human race.
