If We’re Bringing Back the Department of War, Let’s Make the Eagle Honest Again

Apparently the brainstorm du jour is to rebrand the Department of Defense back to the Department of War. Cute. Retro chic. What’s next — reviving the draft with bell bottoms?

If we’re going to do this thing, let’s stop pretending we’re subtle. Right now, the eagle on the DoD seal is facing all noble and virtuous toward the olive branch, as if the Pentagon is staffed by Quakers knitting peace quilts. Please. This is the same organization that’s been drone-striking weddings, running live-fire exercises in half the world’s deserts, and buying enough munitions annually to re-enact World War II from scratch. The olive branch is about as believable as “affordable F-35 program.”

No, if we’re calling it the Department of War, then let’s make the eagle face the arrows again. Make it obvious. Let’s stop the kabuki theater of “peace through strength” and just own what we are: a machine that turns tax dollars into Lockheed Martin dividends and bombs that fall on coordinates.

Picture it: the seal unveiled with the eagle glaring straight at the arrows, talons clutching like it can’t wait to hurl them. Finally, the branding would match the product. Forget the olive branch—half of Congress couldn’t identify one if you slapped them across the face with it. Arrows? Everyone gets arrows.

Of course, this won’t happen, because Washington loves the fig leaf. “Department of Defense” sounds cuddly, like we’re just shielding our borders from evil-doers. “Department of War” sounds like what it actually is. And God forbid the Pentagon let the branding department get that honest.

But hey, if we’re throwing billions at renaming signs, re-imaging servers, and printing new stationery anyway, why stop halfway? Change the name, flip the eagle, and drop the olive branch. Call it truth in advertising. After all, a rose is a rose… and a war machine is a war machine
