God, Guns, and Government: Why Liberty Was Never Meant to Be Licensed

There’s an old truth that modern America keeps trying to forget: rights don’t come from Washington—they come from God. The Constitution doesn’t give you a right to bear arms. It merely recognizes a divine truth that predates every law ever written—man has a God-given right to defend his life, his family, and his freedom. Government’s job is simple: protect that right. Not “regulate” it into irrelevance.

The Framers understood this. Jefferson called these rights “unalienable” because they cannot be traded, taxed, or taken away without rebellion following soon after. Adams warned that our Constitution was made only for a “moral and religious people.” Why? Because the only leash strong enough to restrain liberty is virtue. Without moral self-governance, men cry for masters, and masters eventually oblige.

Every gun law, from the federal register down to the county ordinance, presumes that government owns your right and merely leases it back to you—renewable upon good behavior. That flips the moral order upside-down. If rights come from God, then only God can revoke them. The state can punish crime, yes. But it cannot pre-emptively criminalize freedom in the name of safety. A “licensed liberty” is no liberty at all.

We’ve traded the spirit of ’76 for a stack of forms and background checks. We act shocked when tyranny peeks over the horizon, forgetting that tyranny always arrives wrapped in paperwork. “Well-regulated” once meant well-trained, not well-restricted. Our ancestors knew that an armed citizenry was the final vote that counted when all others were stolen.

The Founders would not recognize a people who beg permission to exercise a divine right. They’d say what Moses said to Pharaoh: Let my people go.

Because ultimately, the Second Amendment isn’t about hunting, sport, or even home defense—it’s about stewardship of the freedom God entrusted to mankind. And any government that presumes to edit what God ordained has already declared war on its own legitimacy.
