I hate being right. Really.
As an aside, some of you may have wondered why I haven’t written much since this spring. I badly needed a break, especially from politics, and wanted to focus on some important priorities… like my family. I knew what was coming, and decided to hold my fire. However, after yesterday, it is absolutely necessary to comment on the bloodbath that occurred… and why.
Last night, Republicans took a beating… nationwide. Even one of my friends, holding strong in past elections, lost his current reelection bid. And the reason for this is simple….
Donald Trump conned us, and the five percent of moderates leaning left that propelled him to the White House to stop the constant, useless wars saw it plain as day. And they voted accordingly. Even worse, many Republicans simply chose to stay home. After all, who can blame them? Staying out of “forever wars” was a signature promise from Trump… and he broke it with hardly even a careless consideration of his base.
I predicted this was coming in previous articles, a few over two years ago.1 And yet came the wave of hopium and copium from the talking heads, saying “all will be well.” They now have serious egg on their face. And we, my friends, are in serious trouble.
We are losing the war against Iran. We are losing the war against Russia, with Ukraine, and soon the rest of Europe, being sacrificial victims to our demonic god of raw power. And we are losing against China. Rah-Rah and slapping our seal fins will do nothing to change this.
Historically, the party in power in the White House loses at least one of the houses of Congress in the midterms, even in the best of times. But Trump and his neocon friends were bound and determined to outdo history. They wrecked the MAGA movement and with it the Republican Party, in their insane effort to lose BOTH houses of Congress… not to mention wrecking others down the line. And all for a bowl of spoiled Ghormeh Sabzi.2
And now we are on track for the likes of Harris or Newsom (or both!) to take the White House in 2028. Once again, we’ve been conned. Once again, defeat has been snatched from the jaws of victory. And with it, the conservative movement that demands reform in our government will once again be blamed for the defeat, and neocons will regain full control of the Republican Party. And with that, we will continue down the road of destruction we are currently on.
One really cannot make this stuff up.
While I started this article by saying “I told you so,” I’m not trying to take any victory lap here. Instead, I mourn as I look upon the gravestone of the MAGA movement, going the way of the Reagan and Teaparty movements.
But then again, folks I knew told me that I didn’t know what I was talking about.
After all… I’m just a dumb historian with 50 years of political work behind him. What do I know?
