Remember the truckers occupying Canada’s capitol? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked Canada’s “Emergencies Act” for the first time since it was passed in 1988. Trudeau granted himself dictatorial powers designed for the state to survive in an extreme emergencies. Parked trucks wasn’t such an emergency. After the trucks were hauled away and the convoy leaders arrested, Trudeau rescinded his order.
All ok, right? Trudeau has been the prime minister since 2015. The parliament supported his power grab along party lines. So, no, that’s the problem. Every member of parliament, regardless of their party loyalty, should recognize and punish any prime minister who had a “Reichstag” moment to seize extraordinary power – like Adolf Hitler did in 1933.
Since the politicians won’t hold Trudeau accountable, what’s to stop any other pol in the future from sweeping aside what remains of Canadians’ individual freedoms?
It’s important because individual freedoms have been restricted severely in all the English-speaking nations. Which is an exceptionally big deal because the English-Speaking branch of Western Civilization is where individual rights have the longest, strongest history as the most cherished aspect of democracy. When individual freedoms disappear from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and its far flung territories, and, finally, the United States, the earth goes dark. Real freedom is lost. Probably forever.
Consider how for years it’s been illegal to criticize Islam or homosexuality in Canada and the UK.
Canada went nuts with mandates and restrictions on liberty. Some provinces were more free than others. But, national travel across provinces and forced vaccinations threatened individual liberty. Some truckers were deeply affected and put together a convoy to park at their capitol until the Covid tyranny ended.
It was a peaceful protest. How much public support it had or not and the patriotic bona fides of the participants can be debated. Regardless of its purity, much like the January 6th, 2021 protest at the U.S. Congress, the over reaction by the state far exceeded any possible threat to the public safety, law and order, or health. Trudeau’s government was dead set on crushing peaceful assembly and individual freedom of choice.
Losing individual freedom is losing a legacy among the English-speaking Peoples that was won against all odds. It’s a long way from the 1215 Magna Charta moment to limit the power of the king with a piece of paper to the creation of Virginia and these United States of America with ideas written on paper in 1776. It’s gotten even better with the expansion of citizenship and the franchise to vote. We are the freest people on the planet.
Unfortunately, across the English-speaking Peoples their Liberals, Progressives, Greens, Democrats, Socialists, etc. by any name share the bad ideas of the French Revolution. In the past these ideas, a.k.a. Human Secular Totalitarianism, evolved into National Socialism, Fascism, and Communism. Every time the “’ism” for the greater good is tried, it results in the loss of freedom, economic opportunity and murder. Significantly, Human Secular Totalitarianism has killed more people than any other human evil in all of humankind’s history.
In this Orwellian era of social justice, social credit scores, surveillance state, the “creepy line” of big tech capabilities, cultural cleansing, de-platforming, identity politics tribalism, cancel culture, “Woke” racism, and mega-rich oligarchs, big pharma and other corporate powers, deep state actors, and permanent governing elites it’s incumbent on all free men and women to defend their individual freedoms.
If Canadians don’t hold Justin Trudeau accountable, they deserve what they get next time their liberty is threatened. Americans need to know a dictatorship could come to our northern border. It could be as dangerous as having a narco-state on our southern border.
Likewise, Americans must wake up to the tyranny of failed city, state, and federal Covid mandates and restrictions. Hold the pols accountable at the polls. Change the laws to restrict government power. Exercise your individual right of free speech to speak the truth to every power that would oppress. As the Bible exhorts, “Fear not.”

We have already lost the battle when there exists any legal way for someone to declare an emergency that restricts our rights. That, like the existence of a National Secret Police force are simply incompatible with individual liberties.
Does “We” mean Canadians or Americans? Clearly defining emergencies, adding advice and consent, and their sundown restrictions can be put into Federal and State law. Is there a national secret police in the U.S. or Canada – the FBI? Thanks for your comment.
We, in this instance, referred to Americans. As far as I am concerned, the FBI became secret police when they were allowed to operate and keep secrets. If they are not forced to operate in public view, they are, by definition police acting in secret. That does not even talk about the CIA operating within the US nor the NSA keeping full records on American communication and banking. Since the abrogation of our rights is already in violation of the US Constitution, I don’t see much hope in reining them in, especially given the Deep State that is the real government.
Good points. When there is a change in administration, if there is a will to do, an inquisition can clean house in the FBI. A massive reform of the Patriot Act can be done as well. Lots of good, hard work to do.
