What Is It We Are Missing? Why?

Looking at what appears to continually go on in DC, and often at state and city governments that tend to cause a little, sometimes a lot of indigestion, is something that is in dire need of replenishing. The missing ingredient is “Excellence.”  Compare and contrast two recent presidents and you will see one who strove for excellence, and was successful, even with all the disclaimers about personality and delivery, to the one who seems hell-bent on undoing and destroying everything in his path.

President Trump, even with all his personality flaws, was a man who understood what excellence means, and performed accordingly. Joe Biden only understands what benefits him, and that cabal of evil ideology that he attached himself to 50 years ago. A human being can strive for excellence every single day of his life, and come close to it, almost every single time, but that doesn’t make him perfect. It means that he tries to act accordingly to all things he faces and finds solutions that best reflect his and society’s wishes, that makes life better for all, not a select few.

Excellence is something the truck driver, the nurse, the baker, the carpenter, the cop, and all walks of life can strive for. It is nothing more or nothing less. Just excellence. When you see it you know what it is. It can or cannot be self serving, but eventually it benefits us all. I don’t know how many have had the privilege to sit in a theater and watch and listen to a symphony perform, but excellence is what they are about. How often do you hear the wrong chord, or an out of place beat? Almost never, because the symphony and conductor strive for excellence, and they deliver. Watch a conductor or a musician and tell me that they are not striving for excellence? If you are honest, you can’t. I remember my days in the high school orchestra(yes, they exist), and I know everything that the band director/conductor was saying to me, and I delivered, because he was a good conductor.

Take it up to another level and ask the question “Is our government striving for excellence?” Comparing the efforts of all the individuals in the orchestra, from me, the high school student in the small orchestra, to the greats in music, to what our government does, is that federal government really striving for excellence? I’m just using the music comparison to make the point with something I really love, but the same comparison can be drawn and used by anyone who sees the need to strive for excellence, that truck driver, baker or cop. Those people we send to DC, to do the business of government, have been doing such a bad job, that excellence doesn’t exist there. It’s like, instead of reducing down to the lowest common denominator, government reduces down to the lowest form of intelligence to do the least for the most, and the missing ingredient is always going to be the lack of excellence, or the striving for it.

Society deserves better. Society pays the bill and suffers the consequences of that lack of excellence. What I am trying so poorly to say is, the next time you hear Itzhak Perlman perform Pablo Sarasete’s “Zigeunerweisen”( Gypsy Airs) on his violin, compare his efforts to what we have in our nation’s capitol. Some people really do take their job seriously. Others’ don’t. Music is not a distraction, but a form of esthetic that pleases. It is an example of good things, to me, even with some of the darkest pieces of music. The thing that I appreciate is the striving for excellence that musician who performs so well.

That piece makes me want to cry thinking what our country could be, but isn’t. Imagine what striving for excellence did for that man. Then imagine how that same effort, striving for excellence, could do for our country. I believe it shows a disconnect between the good people who do strive for excellence, and those who supposedly govern.
