Where Are We Headed: Part II – The Slippery Slope

I wrote recently about the foreboding direction our country is headed.  You can read that column here.  How did we get headed in the wrong direction?  Supposedly good intentions by goodly intentioned people have brought us down this hellish road as they are wont to do.  I have serious doubts as to how good those intentions or people ever were or are.  It doesn’t take a genius to learn from your mistakes.  It takes common sense and memory.  But sometimes as the smartest creatures on God’s earth, some amongst us surely don’t act like they have either.

Our Founders envisioned us striving for a more perfect union.  That is hard for any nation of disparate, sovereign states to achieve.  They made it doubly hard by instituting processes that forced us to think long and hard before making dramatic changes that could affect the lives of millions of citizens.  Striving for perfection is hard.  Striving for the low hanging fruit, the lowest common denominator and jettisoning standards isn’t hard at all.  Falling back on what came before the Union would be to fall back to what has been and continues to be the standard throughout history – tyranny, subjugation, slavery – the lack of individual freedom and liberty in an ordered society.  Our nation is still an experiment in the history of nations.  Whether the experiment fails or succeeds has yet to be determined.

The regressives, sometimes incorrectly referred to as liberals, have stood our country on a banana peel on a downward slope slicked down with used, putrid cooking oil and dared us not to slide into the abyss.  We are on that slide now.  Can we stop ourselves?  We have been able to stop ourselves in the past.  We corrected, or attempted to correct, the big mistakes of Dred Scott, slavery, suffrage, American Indians, Jim Crow, Plessy v. Ferguson, civil rights, internment camps, et al.  Now we seem to be headed in the opposite direction of correction and healing, and instead are headed toward a path of grievance and vengeance.

We are moving away from a more perfect union to a more Godless one, and it’s not by accident.  Prior to the Supreme Court exiling the Holy Bible to the ash heap and out of public schools in 1963, the biggest school problems were chewing gum in class and walking the hallways without a pass.  Nowadays, student violence against teachers is the rampant number one problem.  Pass the chewing gum, please.  Fifty teachers and staff have recently quit a Florida school district due to student violence.

“Another teacher in the district, Alicia Kelderhouse, stated, ‘On an everyday basis I am deflecting being attacked, scratched, headbutted, pushed, hit.  I’ve had my hair pulled, and pulled down to the ground. I’ve had my throat gone for on multiple occasions. It’s on an everyday basis right now,’ Kelderhouse added.”

Does that sound like a school or a prison?  Of course, libs assured us at the time that taking God out of public schools was not a slippery slope.  They assured us we were just being overly emotional and hyperbolic.  Nothing would go wrong as a result.  However, along with student behavior falling down that slope and into the gutter, so have student test scores and proficiency.

The suffragette movement rightfully culminated in the right for women to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.  Since then, the equal right to vote has morphed into many different things in many different areas, not all of them having to do with equality or rights or voting.  During the women’s rights movement (women’s lib) of the 1960’s we were told by feminists that men and women are completely equal, that we are the same, no differences, none at all.  Women could do anything men could do and better.  This led to legislation to codify this notion.  A 1967 national nutrition survey led to the creation of the WIC (women, infants and children) program.  The WIC program grew not only from the civil rights movement but also from the women’s movement.  Pregnancy and very low income (no father household income) were all that were needed to qualify.  All women needed in order to compete with men and to raise their own family without men was an additional little cash from Uncle Sam.  Next thing you know, fathers are no longer a necessity in the home.  The nuclear family went up in a mushroom cloud.

In 1965, 24 percent of black infants and 3.1 percent of white infants were born to single mothers.  As of 2020, 70.4 percent of black infants and 28.4 percent of white infants were born to single mothers.  These are not numbers to be proud of.  Don’t children deserve to know, be loved and supported by both of their parents?  Why do you think crime rates, especially in minority inner cities, are sky rocketing?  What do you think happens when a young man entering puberty, with his testosterone raging, has no father in the home as an example of what a man is and how a man is to treat others, especially women?  What happens is what we have happening now all over the country.  When that young man can’t get rules and discipline at home, he seeks and finds them through his local gang.  Can women do everything men can do?  No.  They can’t be fathers, and no one should expect them to be.  Another win for the slippery slope.

I guess those radical feminists were right about one thing, men and women are exactly the same.  Is it any wonder men are now winning women’s beauty contests, women’s swimming championships, women’s track and field meets and even MMA fights?  Be sure to thank your local chapter of NOW for all of these wonderful equal rights.

A lot of harm to our country came out of the 1960’s.  The sexual revolution included the homosexual revolution.  The Stonewall riots or uprisings of 1969 was the rallying point for the so-called “gay rights” movement.  They only wanted equal rights.  They just wanted to be tolerated.  They just wanted to be left alone.  That’s all.  Yeah right.  What was once considered a mental health problem became not only normal but the cause du jour for the left.  Just wanting to be left alone became in your face radicalism.  The SCOTUS’ Obergefell decision turned a millennia of marital tradition on its head.  The SCOTUS had no authority to create the institution of marriage but found it in its purview to redefine marriage.  After 200+ years of good order and discipline in the U.S. military, Bill “BJ” Clinton decided to legalize homosexuality in the ranks.  When the backlash became too harsh, he switched to DADT (don’t ask, don’t tell), making homosexuality tolerable in the ranks.

Now our military has become a laughingstock to those of us who respect what the military’s mission is supposed to be.  Instead of 100% dedication to combat skills training, the “leaders” of our once proud military are celebrating “pride” daily.  Homosexuality, transsexuality, transgenderism, et al are now in vogue in our armed forces.  Time and money are now being spent on genital surgery, lifelong hormone treatments, new uniform fittings, preferred pronoun classes and chest feeding paternity leave.  Does that sound like combat readiness to you?  All this while those same “leaders” are itching to get us involved in a direct conflict with Russia in Ukraine, which is not our war.

Not only has the homosexual revolution made our military more effeminate, but it is also now targeting our very young with explicit drag shows, story hours, cartoons, parades, gender indoctrination in K-12 schooling, etc.  Even the once family-friendly Walt Disney Company is into sexualizing its youngest fans.  This huge juggernaut of a ship has sailed, and it will take strong captains, like Ron DeSantis, to steer it back from the shoals, if it can be.  Or is it too late?

Our direction is that of regress, not progress.  These are just a few of the legions of slippery slopes we’ve encountered.  We could all come up with many, many more.  The laundry list of “good intentioned” slippery slope ideas is nearly endless and continues.  The next time a whacked out liberal tells you to calm down over their latest idea to “improve” our society, remind them that slippery slopes are real.  Then tell him to take a hike.  Stupid consequences are the result of stupid ideas.  The consequences have become more urgent and possibly deadly.  Let’s get off that banana peel and off that slope and back to navigable territory.  It’s going to take an awful big effort from each of us to get us back on the road to sanity.  Let’s start.
