Democrats Are Losing It on Biden After He Flip-Flops on DC Crime Bill: ‘F****** AMATEUR HOUR’

In January, the District of Columbia City Council unanimously passed a crime bill which, among other things, would reduce the penalties for violent crimes such as carjackings, robberies, and gun-related crimes. Because Washington, D.C., is not a state, legislative decisions must be approved by Congress before they can be enacted.

It’s important to note that Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) vetoed the bill, but the City Council overrode it by a 12-1 vote, according to The Hill.

Last month, the House voted 250-173 to pass a disapproval resolution to block the changes to D.C.’s criminal code. Although the majority of Democrats voted against the measure, meaning they wanted the D.C. crime bill to become law, 31 caucus members voted with the GOP.

Speaking with Senate Democrats on Thursday, President Joe Biden revealed he plans to sign a resolution to overturn the D.C. crime bill. Because he had previously signaled plans to veto the measure, the Democrats who voted against the resolution were furious over his reversal.

Following the meeting, Biden reiterated his intention to sign the bill “If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did.”

Predictably, Biden’s change of heart was not received well by the majority of House Democrats.

In a text message to the Hill, one Democratic lawmaker who wished to remain anonymous wrote, “The White House f***** this up royally.”

The text went on to say, “So a lot of us who are allies voted no in order to support what the White House wanted. And now we are being hung out to dry, F****** AMATEUR HOUR. HEADS SHOULD ROLL OVER AT THE WHITE HOUSE OVER THIS.”

It also said that many of their Democratic colleagues were “EXTREMELY pissed” about it.

The Hill reported: “The White House issued a Statement of Administration Policy opposing the resolution and backing D.C., and that House Democratic leadership told lawmakers that Biden was prepared to veto the measure. The declaration from the Office of Management and Budget called on Congress to ‘respect the District of Columbia’s autonomy to govern its own local affairs.'”

Washington Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal, is “deeply disappointed” over the president’s about-face, according to CNN.

In a statement to the network, she wrote, “This is simple: the District of Columbia must be allowed to govern itself. Democrats’ commitment to home rule should apply regardless of the substance of the local legislation. This is why the Congressional Progressive Caucus and its members have endorsed D.C. statehood, with every CPC member cosponsoring D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton’s bill in the 117th Congress. Statehood is the only way to protect the 700,000 residents of the District from this kind of interference, we will continue to champion this cause.”

The disapproval measure is expected to pass the Senate. No one wants to be seen as being soft-on-crime, especially those who are running for reelection next year.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who will face voters in 2024, announced he plans to support the measure, according to Politico. “You’ve got to send a signal you’re not going to slap them [criminals] on the wrist. They know exactly what they can get by with all over the country,” Manchin said.

Clearly, Democrats took note of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s stunning defeat on Tuesday and want to avoid the soft-on-crime label attached to their names.

Politico reports that a vote in the upper chamber could come as soon as next week.

With the hospitalizations of Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California, who has shingles, and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who is being treated for clinical depression, the balance of power in the Senate temporarily stands at 49-49. So, all things remaining the same, it really wouldn’t take much for the resolution to pass.

The biggest shame is that it is even a question.
