Much of the abuse of power currently exercised by certain branches of law enforcement (i.e. the FBI) was made possible by legislation and the expansion of powers granted immediately following the tragic events of 9/11. It was not a time when socialism seemed to be the prevailing ideology of our governing officials. The executive and legislative branches of the federal government were firmly in the control of Republicans.
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
~Benjamin Franklin
President Bush signed the PATRIOT Act on October 26, 2001, 45 days after the attacks. It is a prime example of such legislation. This Act significantly broadened the surveillance capabilities of law enforcement agencies, permitting them to monitor phone and email communications, collect bank and credit reporting records, and track the activity of innocent Americans on the Internet. It passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, a testament to the fear and uncertainty that gripped the nation after the attacks.
However, in reacting to a crisis – whether real or fabricated – we often find ourselves unable to see past our immediate discomfort and pain. Blinded by fear, we become oblivious to the potential long-term consequences of our decisions. As Benjamin Franklin wisely cautioned us, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
Mr. Franklin’s words are particularly relevant in the context of the PATRIOT Act. Critics argue that the Act infringes on civil liberties and privacy rights. It can be – and often is – used to justify overreach by law enforcement agencies. The mass surveillance of American citizens, a gross violation of the Fourth Amendment, has been justified under the provisions of this Act.
We Have the Power to Turn America Around
We must always be cognizant that decisions made today will have far-reaching implications. They will not only impact our lives. They will impact the lives of the generations that follow us. The powers we grant our government today, in the name of security or otherwise, will not always be wielded by righteous hands. Once we give these powers, they are difficult to roll back.

It is an important lesson to remember as we honor those who have died fighting and protecting our right to choose who we are governed by. The sacrifices made by these brave men and women should not be in vain. Honor them by holding our government accountable.
We must remain vigilant and informed. We cannot compromise our liberty for temporary safety. We must look beyond political party lines and remember we are, first and foremost, American citizens. And our founding fathers placed the power to maintain our liberty and freedoms squarely within our hands
