The use of the word “gender” has been a successful coup by the left. In the past, the word was reserved for sociology and linguistics. Those who know only English are unaware of gender in linguistics, but many languages assign gender to nouns, which affects which article is used with it and how verbs are declined. Personal experience confirms this is true of German, French, and Russian. Sociologists speak of “gender roles.” Traditionally, a police officer, soldier, or fire fighter (formerly known as a “fireman”) were male gender roles while nurse, secretary, and school teacher were female gender roles.
Then came the 1990s. Some of us noticed the push to use the word “gender” to refer to biology, a use that had been vanishingly rare in the past. WIth how sexualized our society has become, this seemed strange. Consider that Jane Austen, who wrote during the second decade of the 19th century (the Regency period), did not blush to have Elizabeth Bennet opine, “Are you so severe upon your own sex as to doubt the possibility of all this?” Similarly, in 1939 Agatha Christie had no problem penning the line, “Poirot smiled. ‘Women,’ he said, ‘are a miraculous sex!'”
Through the 70s and 80s, it became almost trite to have a character in a sitcom, while answering questions to fill out a government form, to reply to the question, “Sex?” with, “Yes.” Suddenly there was a push to use “gender” instead of “sex” in the 90s. This set off alarm bells. There had been no wave of prudishness sweeping the nation; quite the contrary. It was a time when leftists would actually say that oral sex isn’t actually sex without the slightest shame at their obvious, politically-driven disingenuousness.
Knowing that the motivation wasn’t a degree of puritanical squeamishness exceeding even that of the early 19th century, it was clear that there had to be some motivation, some hidden agenda behind the very intense push to switch from using the word “sex” which had always been considered the appropriate term when speaking of biology. It was a time when same-sex marriage and sex change surgery were rare and controversial and we didn’t even have the acronym LGBT, let alone the alphabet soup it has become.
Even then, almost 30 years ago, it was clear to me what that agenda was, and I spoke it in an alumni email forum whenever anyone used “gender” instead of “sex.” It became a standing joke among many of the regulars; they often vyed to see who could post the warning that my rant would soon follow. Like clockwork, it did, because I wanted to oppose the insidious leftist agenda. After pointing out what I’ve mentioned above, I would warn that the push to use “gender” was entirely Orwellian; a perfect example of Newspeak. Once the left had succeeded in replacing “sex” with “gender,” only then would we be informed that there are actually six genders.
My warning was mocked. No one took it at all seriously. Yet time has proven its accuracy and how correct Orwell’s warnings were. My only mistake was my inability to conceive of more than six genders. When it comes to biology, “gender” is a nonsensical word, but it fits entirely with the left’s agenda of changing the very way we think. Whenever the word “gender” is used instead of “sex,” the left has already won the battle. They have succeeded in changing the thinking of our people. Proving the accuracy of the old saw about “the hand that rocks the cradle,” anyone younger than 35 was taught (in liberal-run schools) to use “gender” rather than “sex.”
Stop doing it. Return to the correct use of the language. Whenever you’re referring to biology, use the word “sex.” There are only two sexes but there are dozens of genders because gender is meaningless when referring to biology. Even better, whenever you use “sex” instead of “gender,” you make woke heads explode.
