Why the Slogan Falls Apart Under Pressure
“Diversity is our strength” sounds nice on a poster—but slogans aren’t truths. Jonathan Pageau put it best:
“Diversity without unity is decomposition.”
Let that sink in.
⸻
Diversity Isn’t Magic
Diversity is just difference. That’s all. It can be beautiful—or chaotic. A toolbox full of random parts isn’t useful unless they work together. A society is the same.
• Without shared language, you get confusion.
• Without shared values, you get culture wars.
• Without shared goals, you get gridlock.
Diversity is only a strength if it’s pulled toward a center.
⸻
History Backs This Up
• Rome fell when its citizens stopped being Roman first.
• Yugoslavia shattered when Tito’s grip loosened.
• Even the biblical Tower of Babel collapsed when diversity of language killed unity of purpose.
Diversity without a unifying story becomes entropy. Division. Decay.
⸻
Tribal by Nature
Humans default to tribes. That’s not racist—it’s reality. If you remove a common culture, people don’t become global citizens. They just form smaller, angrier tribes. Social cohesion isn’t natural—it’s built.
⸻
So What’s the Answer?
Unity first.
Then diversity, if it fits the mission.
Think orchestra, not open mic night.
Think special forces team, not a crowd of randos at a bus station.
Diversity isn’t strength. Unity is strength.
Diversity is the test.
And if you fail that test?
You don’t get strength.
You get decomposition.
…diversity without order; is chaos.
