America did not become irreligious. That is the fairy tale. America simply changed religions.
The old civic faith began with the Declaration’s claim that rights come from the Creator, not from Congress, bureaucrats, courts, experts, activists, or whatever credentialed raccoon is currently chewing through the wiring at the Department of Education. The Founders argued that men are “created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,” and that government exists to secure those rights, not manufacture them like cheap plastic trophies at a federal grant conference.
That order mattered. God was above man. Man was above government. Government was chained down like a dangerous dog because the Founders knew human nature was not basically angelic. It was fallen. Power corrupts. Ambition needs ambition to counteract it. Original sin was not merely a church doctrine; it was a constitutional design principle.
Then came the modern swap. We did not abolish religion. We replaced Christianity with a bureaucratic mystery cult: scientism, wokeism, therapeutic self-worship, and state-managed salvation.
Eric Voegelin saw this pattern decades ago. He argued that modern ideologies often imitate ancient Gnosticism by trying to drag salvation out of heaven and force it into history through politics. The old phrase is “immanentizing the eschaton,” which is a fancy way of saying: “We are going to build heaven on earth, and if you peasants resist, we have forms for that.” Voegelin’s point was not that modern activists are literally reading dusty Gnostic scrolls in a basement while wearing hemp robes. His point was sharper: modern ideological movements often follow the same spiritual architecture. Reality is corrupt. The world must be remade. A special enlightened class possesses the hidden knowledge. Ordinary people are trapped in false consciousness. Salvation comes through awakening, compliance, and political restructuring.
Sound familiar?
Ancient Gnosticism taught that the material world was defective and that liberation came through secret knowledge. Modern woke ideology says society is structurally defective and liberation comes through ideological awakening. Same skeleton, new haircut.
Christianity says creation is good but fallen. Gnosticism says creation is the problem. Modern radical politics says the existing order is the problem: family, nation, sex, tradition, church, merit, law, borders, history, language, and even math if it refuses to wear the little rainbow armband.
The new priesthood is not wearing collars. It wears lanyards.
“Trust the science” became the liturgy. Not “respect science,” which any sane person should. Real science is a method: test, observe, challenge, replicate, revise. Scientism is different. Scientism is science wearing a fake bishop hat. It turns experts into clergy, consensus into dogma, dissent into heresy, and peer review into a digital Council of Nicaea run by people who cannot define “woman” without checking HR policy.
Charles Taylor described the rise of the modern “age of authenticity,” where the self turns inward and personal identity becomes something discovered or created inside the individual rather than received from God, family, nature, or tradition. Carl Trueman develops that further, arguing that the modern self has shifted from an identity anchored in external authorities like church, family, and community toward an inward, psychological self where feelings become authoritative.
That is the Gnostic move: the inner self becomes sacred, while the created order becomes suspect.
Male and female? Oppressive construct.
Nation? Imagined oppression machine.
Family? Patriarchal conditioning unit.
Religion? Dangerous unless neutered into a social justice support animal.
The body? Raw material for self-expression.
Reality? Negotiable, provided you have enough institutional power, university jargon, and cowardly administrators.
This is why wokeism and scientism work so well together. One supplies the moral panic. The other supplies the lab coat. Wokeism declares the world guilty. Scientism declares the experts infallible. Government then arrives as savior, therapist, parent, priest, and parole officer.
This is not secular neutrality. It is a rival religion.
It has sacraments: DEI trainings, land acknowledgments, pronoun rituals, struggle sessions, public confessions, and mandatory reeducation modules.
It has original sin: privilege.
It has saints: activists.
It has demons: Christians, conservatives, fathers, borders, and anyone who says “hold on, that’s insane.”
It has indulgences: donations, hashtags, approved yard signs, and corporate statements written by interns with sociology minors.
It has excommunication: cancellation.
And it has heaven: a utopia of perfectly equal, perfectly managed, perfectly inclusive society where no one is offended, everyone is monitored, and every child belongs to the state because parents are just unlicensed extremists with snack drawers.
The American founding was imperfect because humans are imperfect. But its moral architecture was sane: rights come from God, government is limited, truth exists, virtue matters, and liberty cannot survive if citizens become self-worshiping toddlers with voting rights.
The new Gnostic America says the opposite. Rights come from identity. Truth comes from power. Morality comes from consensus. Meaning comes from self-invention. Salvation comes from politics. And government, naturally, gets to hold the cattle prod.
That is not progress. That is ancient heresy with Wi-Fi.
America does not need a state church. It needs something more basic: a return to reality. God above government. Truth above feelings. Nature above ideology. Duty above appetite. Family above bureaucracy. Liberty under moral law.
Because when a nation kills God, it does not become rational.
It becomes religious about stupid things.
