This column has warned on several occasions about the dangers posed by RINOs. They consistently betray conservative principles and generally do so when their betrayal causes maximum damage – think Chief Justice Roberts lying about the Obamacare legislation to make sure it remained intact. The solution is to vote these quislings out of office, but GOP voters show a consistent tendency to vote for incumbents even when the incumbent shafts them. That must change, and the RINOs latest betrayal of their voters and the Constitution, and their defiance of the SCOTUS, in the gun legislation passed yesterday should convince every good conservative that RINOs are as dangerous to the Republic as any Democrat. The gun legislation might just as well been written by President Xi of China considering the anti-Constitutional provisions of the bill.
As usual, this gun bill was a result of Democrats and RINOs following the old left-wing dictum, never let a crisis (or a tragedy) go to waste. In a typically Democrat, crude, and low-class campaign, the Democrats and their RINO allies used the Uvalde school massacre and its emotional aftermath to grandstand before the public over stopping such shootings by violating the Constitutional rights of law-abiding America citizens and suspending due process for everyone in the country. It was like the deja vu all over again. Last time, the excuse for suspending our rights and using force to coerce folks to comply was a global pandemic, this time the excuse was a school shooting in Texas. Is it obvious that the pretexts for their government power grabs keep getting more and more flimsy.
Previously, this author outlined a commonsense series of steps that governments across the country could take to reduce gun deaths and school shootings in particular: 1) Arm Teachers and faculty if they choose to get trained and certified with a weapon. Pay them for that service; 2) Increase penalties (including capital punishment) for gun crimes and enforce the current laws; 3) Put armed law enforcement officers in schools; 4) Prosecute people who knowingly enable mass shooters; 5) Enact red flag laws to prevent felons and mentally disturbed people from buying guns. To be clear, the last provision is acceptable only if due process is followed. Current red flag laws that allow judges or prosecutors to authorize gun seizures based on complaints by other citizens are a clear violation of due process and un-Constitutional on their face. Taking away a citizen’s Constitutional rights is a serious measure and should be done only after careful examination of the facts and allowing the target of the complaint to present his side of the case in a court of law. These steps are common sense and could be implemented easily and quickly.
Not surprisingly, the gun bill just passed does none of these things. It encourages red flag laws, but completely ignores due process protections. It does not arm teachers or place law enforcement officers in schools. It has no provisions to ensure that prosecutors who are soft on gun crime are censured or disciplined and does nothing to increase enforcement of current gun laws. It does not have penalties for enablers of gun crimes. In short, this bill restricts gun rights, again, but does nothing to make it harder for criminals to carry out mass shootings or deter them by increasing the danger of committing such a crime, or the making punishments for such crimes more severe. However, it does make it harder for law abiding adults under 21 years of age to get a gun and funds the expansion of red flag laws without due process protections. The only positive thing to be said is that it isa lot less Unconstitutional than the bill passed by the House. Unfortunately, with a Democrat Congress, this bad bill will become law. It is enough to make any good conservative despair for America’s future.
As bad as the gun bill is, what is more sickening is that once again, a crash of RINOs decided to defect and vote against the interests of their constituents and the Constitution. The dishonor roll reads like a who’s who of usual suspects: Mitch McConnell; Joni Ernst; Lisa Murkowski; Susan Collins; Lindsay Graham; Roy Blunt; Rob Portman; Mitt Romney; Pat Toomey; Richard Burr; etc. Need we go on? On the other side of the aisle, party discipline was perfect. All the Democrats lined up behind their agenda. One can only hope that GOP politicians will start being team players in some utopian future. Until then, the best conservative voters can do is get fired up and vote these arrogant turncoats out. Fortunately, 4 of these scoundrels are retiring this year. That means GOP voters have a chance to replace them with true conservatives. Choose well, grasshoppers.

Minor quibble, Ned. Change “2) Increase penalties (including capital punishment) for gun crimes and enforce the current laws” to “… for VIOLENT crimes …” regardless of weapon and I’m with you. Someone who gets shanked or beaten to death is just as dead as someone who’s been shot.
