A Disconnect in Values: From Roosevelt to the Biden Administration

The federal Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, passed last year and signed into law, brings to light a perplexing shift in values within our nation. A provision within the act amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), barring federal funds from supporting programs that offer dangerous weapon training. Recently, the US Department of Education (DOE) interpreted this law to halt youth programs in schools that involve shooting sports. Institutions with trap and skeet teams, the National Archery in the Schools program (NASP), and hunter education are forced to halt these programs to retain federal funding through ESEA.

Comparing this to Teddy Roosevelt, my favorite President, reveals the stark transformation our nation has undergone over the past 122 years. Roosevelt, a proponent of personal responsibility, preparedness, and practical skills, voiced his support for teaching marksmanship to school children. Addressing Congress on December 3, 1901, during his first annual message as President, he stated, “The great body of our citizens shoot less as times goes on. We should encourage rifle practice among schoolboys, and indeed among all classes, as well as in the military services by every means in our power.”

The irony is palpable. Roosevelt’s wisdom emphasized discipline, respect for firearms, and self-sufficiency. In contrast, the Biden administration, via the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, aims to eliminate youth programs involving shooting sports in the name of safety. The very skills that empower young minds and instill responsibility are now labeled as “dangerous.”

This isn’t an endorsement of a Wild West mentality; rather, it recognizes the power of education. The ability to safely handle firearms, understand their usage, and cultivate focus and discipline shouldn’t be sacrificed for misguided ideology. Programs such as trap and skeet teams, National Archery in the Schools, and hunter education provide valuable experiences that teach respect for nature, fellow humans, and adulthood’s responsibilities.

In an era of extreme views, a balanced approach prioritizing education, empowerment, and common sense is vital. The Biden administration’s interpretation of the law, resulting in the elimination of these programs, defies historical lessons and deprives our youth of growth opportunities. The disparity between Roosevelt’s ideals and today’s reality underscores the unintended consequences of prioritizing safety over common sense

  1. Indeed, praying the pendulum and society in general rapidly starts the swing towards sanity. After a recent overnight medical trip to East Syracuse I am not encouraged (sorry to the GOOD people there)
